Hi all

Just been signed up to nhs 12 week plan and came on here to see what people feel about weight watchers or slimming world! Had some serious health issues in past and was not as mobile as used to be for a few years so need to lose weight and get fit again. Any hints and suggestions very very welcome :)

Hi and welcome, Geekgirl :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the NHS BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

You have come to the right place, lots of encouragement and heaps of support. Good luck on your journey and look forward to hearing how you go:)

The most important thing you can do is to keep a food diary. Write down every thing no matter how small. The small things can add up. A woman can lose weight using 1400 calories per day. Learn to find low calorie treats. Then you will not feel deprived.

I am 50 years old, overweight since the age of 9, tried Slimming World and Weight Watchers - I'd lose some weight and then regain it all and some!

When I was 49, I started logging what food I ate and the calories it contained. I use a site called weightlossresources.co.uk it has an online database of foods so you can just find the food and enter it plus the weight of your portion.

For the first time ever I woke up to just HOW MUCH I was eating - both the portion sizes and the calorie values. I enjoyed nothing more than munching my way through a large bag of assorted roasted nuts! Now realise that there were more calories in them then I should have been eating over a whole day! And that was ON TOP of my meals for the day...

The rest is history. It took me 2.5 years to lose 4.5 stone and I have made lifelong changes to the way I make food choices now. It took a massive mental change to my eating - not seeing food and its consumption as always being a reward. "I've been shopping, so I'll have a cream cake with a cup of tea", etc.

Here are a few of my past posts which I hope you will find helpful and inspiring. I won't try and tell you that my journey was easy - and you'll see that there were many blips along the way, but 5 years down the line, I feel about 20 years younger than I did when I was lugging around 4 stone more.

Please do pop back to the forums and share your journey with us - we are here for you, day and night and happy to share your success or support you when you need it.

I have lost weight on slimming world but to be totally honest its expensive now. Also I remember being told rice pasta jacket spuds unlimited but actually now i'm older I think that is not the way for me anymore. It really is cut back smaller portions and get exercise of some sort. I really prefer to weigh my food. I had a huge jacket potato earlier, weighed it, was shocked and swapped it for a smaller one. So the healthy option wasn't that healthy after all. Portion control for me was more guessing and i still had my meal today just less of it. The calorie counter on here is so easy. labels are easy too and I use my left over allowance for a treat in the evening. Nothing feels deprived its just all in proportion.

Thanks all for your encouragement and suggestions. I know the calorie counting will be the thing I need to get my head around but think it will work for me. I have 12 free sessions with either weight watchers or slimming world but not sure whether to use them or even which one! This forum seems more helpful already :)

Hi there. I have done both Slimming World and Weightwatchers in the past. Of the two I much preferred Slimming World as I liked not having to weigh everything, and it really did work for me as I did lose weight and did find weighing in each week helped (but you can do that here). However as mentioned by Girlieghosthunter slimming clubs are expensive and they charge you for sessions you miss so that didnt suit me as my work means I can not be regularly available in the same place every week (I go abroad with my work). Which is why I am signed up here this time as I can do it from anywhere - even abroad - and it is free. However I did like the Slimming World program and dont rule out using it (without the classes) at some point instead of calorie counting if I get too fed up with counting calories in everything. (maybe that's heresy here, though!)
