Hi and welcome
Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.
Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.
Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI (can be found in the pinned Newbie post) to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for π
Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate π
To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support - which is great to get ideas of what other people are eating and I have to confess to nicking some of their menu's and our βWhat's happening todayβ thread, where we pop in for a chat.
Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page
We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too π
Wishing you all the best on your journey
thank u so much π
Just try the diet and you will see results. Make sure you eat enough and we'll support you along the way.
i will do thank u π
Hi beckyboo and welcome to this site full of friendly, helpful and knowledgeable people.
Just wanted you to know that when I joined in Jan, that I had to lose 2 1/2 stone as well. I did that by following the NHS 12 week plan. The good thing, is that you still get to eat and drink what you want, just in sensible portions.
Good luck!
Hi Becky, I am in almost exactly the same position. I know I need to do it but I can't. My problem is what to make that's quick and healthy for dinner (as I'm shattered after making dinner for the kids). I need to make a seperate dinner for myself and half the time I have no energy.
Ask yourself what is stopping u? Take it a small step at a time. Don't set hard targets. Maybe increase your fruit for a start and water to replace your snacks. When u feel ready then think about ur meals. I'm on the meals bit as there's no point in eating fruit but then having a massive portion of dinner! That's just my battle at the moment xxx
my problem is i'm always looking at different diets find something & im like o i will start that in the morning π instead of finding one & sticking to it ! & sometimes not eating enough at all π xx
Maybe don't look at diets, don't put pressure on yourself. I used to do this and I've still not lost weight. Don't know if u have my fitness pal but put in there what ur eating now and then work slowly. Defo increase ur water. I have bought one of those water bottles and I drink 3 of those a day - it will stop u making bad choices. Then think about ur meals - take one meal at a time. Lose a lb the first week if u can do this urself and carry on. I always give in to what kids are having and my plan wasn't working. This week am planning on just having jacket pot w tuna and veg and beans. I know that's a lot but I get hungry at night so I need this. Hope some of that helps but don't put this much pressure on yourself. No need to get stressed. Take each day as it comes and see what happens by the end of the week! Hope that helps xxx
yeh u r so right Adheela i'm always thinking & stressing about my weight & so annoyed wiv myself not being anywhere near goal weight for my holiday π thank u so much xxx
I found it helpful, that I've never thought of this journey as a 'diet' but as way of being healthy and (rather cheesily) treating my body with more respect than I have done up to now. (BTW I was that person who two years ago (at over 50yrs of age) had become resigned to never losing weight, after yet another failed 'diet').
The good thing about the NHS plan is that you're able to eat a cross range of foods, so you're getting all the various food groups, vitamins and minerals that you need.
The biggest trick is to stick to it but by staying in touch with everyone here, you'll be surprised how much easier it is.... even when you think you're going backward or that you're about to fail. Happened to me enough times and the lovely people here helped me enormously.
Hi Adheela. I can see how it must be difficult if you're trying to eat differently to your kids.
I don't know how you're doing for freezer space but I tend to batch cook over weekends into portionable sizes (tend to be double portions so I have something to last two days). The weekend before last, I did 18 portions of veg curry and 18 more of courgette masala curry. I then have things like portions of chili con carne or just individually frozen chicken breasts. Most of that is good for mixing and matching plus quick to nuke or bake. Those are just some 'me' examples so sky's the limit on what you could do. I even do portions of fruit crumble with the total calories written on them, then I just have a portion of that in the evening depending upon how my cals are totting up for the day
Hope that helps.
Hi tiger, thanks for taking the time to reply. I could freeze meals for the week on the weekend and I have the space. My only problem is what to make that's quick and easy and healthy. Can I ask what did u put in ur veg curry ? And any other fav recipes u freeze. I think this would be key to my weight loss as at the moment I'm still eating what kids are eating and it doesn't help as I can easily go overboard x
Thanks xxx
Hidden posted this veg curry a while back and I've made about 3 batches using the basic spices then using what veggies I have...

Then the two below I make because I have had a glut of broad beans and courgettes...

My other 'go to' is chilli con carne. I include baked beans, kidney beans and green lentils. Someone here got me into using lentils and I use them to reduce the amount of meat.
I guess just do whatever you like but if you work out the cals for the whole batch then you know in advance how many are in each portion which saves a lot of time.
Welcome beckyboo82 Think about what you decide to eat as a lifestyle change rather than a diet. Whatever you do needs to be sustainable.
Enjoy your food, make it your friend not your enemy!
Hi Becky, I am same age as you and have about same weight to lose. I have been on the popular diet clubs and I found it just taught you how to cheat. I am using the nhs 12 week plan which is not a diet but healthy eating plan. I am on week 2 but it is about healthy food swaps and increasing activity. I have lost weight and lost inches off my waist. I am hoping that this weigh in will be a good one.
I think to set yourself each week small goals and don't beat yourself up if you don't achieve the goal. There is always another week. Use a food diary to keep a check of what you are eating. Hope this helps x
Welcome to the forum beckyboo82 just thought I would advise to you and also Adheela that this is the best way to do things just by calorie counting as you will get so used to it you will still end up looking at calories much more often and then before you know it you will always do it for life so you don't go back, this is why many of us see this as a lifestyle change instead. You don't actually have to eat much differently to before or even your children as you can gradually change this but one thing you do need to do is count your calories. I do this on MyFitnessPal but I don't go by the calories it recommends you eat because these are just average amounts for people and I go by the NHS bmi calculator as this gives personal amounts for all. I would also look at what I will eat during the day and make sure that I will make sure I put in my dinner before I make it so I know if I have extra calories left so I can work out if we should cook more foods or look at what else I will eat as pudding or similar so I don't have this too late. You can also look at the daily diaries to get some ideas of food to eat as this is where people put in all of what they are going to eat for the day. Have a look.
Do make sure you eat somewhere between the amount of calories advised for you to lose weight on the NHS bmi calculator because if you don't eat enough your body thinks you are starving it and turns what you do eat into body fat and this weighs more than eating the extra calories does so it stops you from losing weight and sometimes puts weight on instead. Please don't make this same mistake. This diet is slow but you lose the body fat as well, I keep getting asked where I have gone by people I know. It makes you feel great. Good luck with your journey.
