Hello amy867 and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum

I feel for you Amy, I have been in that same place so many times 😕 What changed for me was accepting it was going to need permanent changes, and accepting slower, smaller losses so I could eat better and not be hungry. Please check your target calories carefully using the NHS BMI checker. Eating too little and getting too hungry is the single biggest cause of weight loss failure.

Here are a few suggestions on how to get the most out of the forum. Please note if you are using the new HU App many of these features are not available so I suggest you use the full website version.

The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you. Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate

The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, as well as a new Daily Diary, if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page. And if you just want to chat, to say hello or share any news or struggles then look out for What's Happening Today thread.

You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too. If you have any questions please just ask

Best wishes

Anna

thank you! will check out all your suggestions :)

Hi amy867 - I'm sure that many of us know exactly what you mean. All I can say is don't give up. It will eventually just 'click' - I lost about 45lbs after thinking the same as you - months and years of just starting a 'diet' only to fail 2 or 3 weeks (or days !) in - and getting more and more discouraged each time.

Keep going, don't worry if you have a bad day or two, just get back on the wagon again and it'll work out !

Hi amy867 and welcome.

No need to feel nervous, we are a friendly bunch!

I think that there is a lot of evidence that most people give up a diet about 2 - 3 weeks in. Sadly, most people expect to lose weight quickly, but it's not going to happen that way unless you adopt some sort of faddy diet that isn't sustainable.

I lost my 4st over 2.5 years - 130 weeks. So when you break it down, that is less than half a pound a week. Of course, some weeks I lost more, some weeks I lost less, some weeks I stayed the same and some weeks I gained!

I think the secret of success is spending time to examine what your "triggers" are for over-eating. Are you an emotional eater? A boredom eater?

Another thing that might help is to log the weight and calorie values of the foods that you eat so that you get an insight into the calorific values of foods. That's what I did (and still do), as it provides a simple way to stay on track. I can only eat 1100 calories a day to lose weight as I am very short, sedentary because of disability and don't have too much more to lose. Therefore I choose to have just two meals a day (lunch and dinner) and I have to be very strict about treats....

Here are a few of my past posts which I hope you will find helpful and inspiring? I won't try and tell you that my journey was easy - there were many blips along the way, but 5 years down the line, I feel about 20 years younger than I did when I was lugging around 4 stone more.

Please do pop back to the forums and share your journey with us - we are here for you, day and night and happy to share your success or support you when you need it.

If you are eating too much, just make sure it's the healthy option. I miss my sweets, but an apple or plums stop me heading for the biscuit barrel.

Hi amy867

It is my first week trying to lose weight again so don't feel discourage during your journey. I have fallen off the diet wagon ( I won't mention how many times) but I am not giving up so you keep forging ahead and don't you give up.

The NHS 12 Week Plan is a good tool to aid your weight loss. I'm finding the information useful.

Stay in touch because support is just a click away, okay.

Hi. I feel sad and anxious too but as soon as you make some progress you will feel better mentally and physically. I am doing it this time with support of those who understand and really care. So xan you. Make sure you are eating enough calories. Otherwise you will make the mistake of many of us who starve and don't lose til we up the calories. You know what to do so let's do this together. Good luck to you. Are you going to choose a weigh in day?if so choose a group and get started.
