It's never too late. I'm 54 and starting to feel the difference after only 4 days on the nhs 12 week plan. I can see how feeling better about and within yourself should be number 1 and the weight loss comes as the bonus (it's taken years to believe this) Don't try to do everything at once. Take one step each week and build up from there.
Hi there, this is the best site I ever joined and the first site that managed to tell me the actual reason why I always struggled with losing weight properly in the past. The mistake I had always made before was because I never ate enough calories to even lose weight. Firstly, make sure you check how many calories you should be having every day to be able to lose weight on the NHS bmi calculator. You will get two amounts you can choose to eat between. I would recommend you eat the higher amount as you will then have amounts you can gradually lower if you find you have any problems. If you don't even eat somewhere between these amounts and try to eat lower than these amounts you will not lose weight because your body will think that you are starving it and will turn what you do eat into body fat to ensure it can continue and this weighs more than eating the extra calories does so it stops you from losing weight and sometimes puts weight on instead. This was the reason I wasn't losing weight beforehand so please don't make this mistake as well. Good luck with your journey.
Hello alexnan and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum
To answer your question, absolutely yes! Age is no barrier to weight loss 😊
Here are a few suggestions on how to get the most out of the forum. Please note if you are using the new HU App many of these features are not available so I suggest you use the full website version.
The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you. Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news
Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate
The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, as well as a new Daily Diary, if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page. And if you just want to chat, to say hello or share any news or struggles then look out for What's Happening Today thread.
You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too. If you have any questions please just ask
Best wishes
Anna
It's never too late, I'm in my 50s and I have lost almost 3 stone since the beginning of the year. I have at least the same to lose again and I feel as though this time I am really going to achieve it.
I have just got back from food shopping. The fridge is now packed with fruit, veg and healthy snacks :o) I am determined to do this. My usual weakness is rose wine but I walked straight passed without buying. I don't think I will ever stop having a drink completely but will swop wine for gin and low cal tonic and restrict drinks to the weekend.
Hi and welcome to this friendly forum and of course you can loose weight after all if a low willpowered, emotional eater like myself can do it anyone can. I started last year just 56 now 57 and still trying because if you don't do it for yourself no one else will, treat yourself to a healthier you it's the best present you will ever have 👍 believe me my aches and pains are nearly non existant at the moment it's worth every bit of willpower the benefits far out weigh doing nothing at all.
Start today and together with everyone else on the forum we can all do it😊
I feel the same Itsbab, it is so important for health to eat nice food and cook from scratch instead or killing ourselves with rubbish. You have done so well with your 4 stone loss that's what I want to be at by the end of the year.
YES YES YES you can lose weight in your 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s if you balance the number of calories in with calories out , appropriate for your age and size. Use the BMI checker to see what is right for you.
There are lots of us over 60s on here. Several of us have lost our spare weight and are now successful maintainers. I for one, lost 2.5 stone in my sixties and now feel at least ten years younger!
YOU CAN DO THIS TOO 😊😊😊
Thank you all so much. I have used the BMI checker and am surprised at the amount of calories I am allowed. I did download an app to my phone and that says I should only have 1200 calories a day. It's all confusing but am going to stick with the info on here.
In my humble experience, the BMI checkers need to be used with care. I know a young man who plays a lot of Rugby and according to the BMI charts is 'Obese!' Yea, right, YOU tell him that! LOL
If in any doubt, have a word with a nutritionist, they'll give you the lowdown on what is right and wrong.
All the best
