I decided to go to the Gp because I was having headaches and was grieving a loss of a family member. I hadn't had a checkup for a long time and thought everything was fine. I discovered I had high blood pressure and borderline diabetes. Due to what I know now I'm making a change and I'm working on losing some weight.

Hi Sonyalondon

Good luck hun, I am border line diabetic (if there is such a reading) I often get hunger pangs and sugar rushes if I havnt eaten for hours-trouble is I have a large hiatus hernia in my gullet and even though I have eaten its sat in the gullet trapped whilst the rest of me goes thru the hunger phase!!
Thanks, at the moment I'm struggling with changing my diet. It's harder than I thought. Gonna keep at it, as you know it's a life or death thing. Everything that's bad for you taste good. I've got to retrain my mind.
You were right to have the headaches checked out as all kinds of health related symptoms can be put down to emotional distress.
Best advice about grieving that I have seen as helpful is to try and stay connected with people, even in a small way
Did your GP suggest counting carbs for each meal and snack to control the borderline diabetes? Counting carbs will also help with any weight loss.
No Gp advise me to cut out oils and sugar from my diet and reduce my food portions and do exercise. I'm struggling with all 4 but I've got to do it. How do I work out the correct amount of carbs I should have?
Make a list of each item you eat for a meal or snack. Write down the name of the item and the total of carbs in each of those items (i.e.: milk: 13 grams carb). After everything is written down and totaled, then you will know how many carbs you had eaten.
Had the GP told you what they want the total to be for each meal and/snack when you were in the appointment? Did a Dietian say anything?
Im sorry to hear that your grieving and having had personal ecperience fairly recently its not easy, so be gentle with yourself and try not to stress you will get there, It certainly help with the headaches.
Diet wise its always good to get healthier and losing a few pounds will help your conditions to.
It is the sugar that is not good for us in large amounts, fats, our body needs a certain amount to help burn of calories but try and stick to healthy ones and not laden rich pastries and pies. Keep your plate colourful and in portion and like me you do have a tendancy to want a snack it probably means you haven't eaten as much as you should in ways of proteins at meal times. Good snacks are nuts and fruit
Some members calorie count and that does help but it does have to be a plate of calorie counted good foods, so sometimes to start its best to change what your actually eating first
Good Luck you will gets loads of great advice, there are a lot of lovely people on this forum who I've become close friends with and a social network is always good for us mentally too.
