A newbie who struggles to keep on track!

Hi

I joined a few weeks ago and have finally taken the plunge to introduce myself.

You seem such an encouraging bunch of people and I definitely need motivating or I give up!!

I'm not one for joining slimming clubs but have managed to lose 17lbs in 2 months by cutting out the rubbish and snacks and generally eating less.

I've not budged in the last two weeks though, in fact I gained this week, so think that maybe I should be following some kind of plan??

I am 57 and need to lose around three and a half stone in total.

I was initially 188lbs and am now 171lbs but am only 5'2" so have a long way to go!

I've lost weight in the past but never keep it off and end up bigger than before, but my daughter gets married next year so I have an incentive to lose it and keep it off this time.

There is a family history of heart disease and I was recently prescribed statins as I have high cholesterol. But I don't like taking them and I previously found losing weight brought my cholesterol down to a normal level, so I am hoping it will do the same again.

My exercise consists of the occasional long walk and that's about it. I know I should be doing more, but gyms and classes are not really my thing......partly because I don't want to be the old fat one at the back struggling to keep up but also because I have a balance disorder

I was considering buying a treadmill so that I can hold on to the handles as I exercise. Does anyone else use one of these? Any suggestions as to what I should be looking for?

Sorry for the long post....hope to join in now I've broken the ice!

Morning Shar59

Welcome to the weight loss forum.

Well done on losing 17lb so far, that is brilliant going. Would you like a 1 stone badge to celebrate your loss so far?

Take a look at the Welcome Newbie post in the Pinned post section at the right hand side or at the bottom if your on a mobile. Have a look at the nhs 12 week plan, many members have had success following this plan. Use the BMI checker to work out your daily calorie allowance.

Have a look at the Daily Diary which you can find on the Home page in Events. It is where all the members are sharing their daily plans on what they are eating and any exercise they are doing. This thread will give you some ideas on how to start.

Below the Pinned posts are the Topics where members share a range of weight related subjects.

Take your measurements at the start together with a photo so you can see the changes on the days the scales don't move.

We have daily weigh ins so why not come along and join us today. You can find the weigh ins on the Home page in the Events section on the right. Just click on the post in Events and record your start weight and any loss/gain or maintain for the week.

To get the most of the forum be active, share tips, recipes and experiences. Read some of the posts they are very motivating.

Have a good first week.

Yes please! I would love a badge :)

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome

I'm struggling a bit finding my way around the site so think I need to spend some time to get accustomed to it. I've found the Saturday weigh in page but haven't sussed what I need to do to join it yet!

I live in a lovely part of South Devon with some great walks on the doorstep. My husband and I are going to go for a long walk along the coastal path this afternoon and this time I will resist the ice cream at the other end!

Is walking enough though, or should I be aiming for something more vigorous?!!

To join the weigh in just click on the post in Events and it takes you to the weigh in. Then just state your weight, any loss/gain or maintain for the week.

Start off with the walking and then you can increase your exercise as you go. I use walking as my main exercise and with 2 walks a day I have lost nearly 5 stone since end of last June.

Hi Shar,

You have come to the right place, as YellowRose55 said take your time and have a good look at all the info, there loads all good😀

To help get you moving have a look at the Kicking the Kilometers challange, it is posted on a Sunday by Fizzylizzy13 . When I started here I got myself a pedometer and just walked. I would go round the block as a start😀

Enjoy

😇

Hi and welcome Shar59 look forward to seeing you post more and your progress :)

Hi Shar59 I am also 57 and 5 ft 2 inches so snap! I have a desk job but have a Fitbit which makes me do a little more than I would do otherwise. I know how you feel about gym classes as I am generally the eldest, but not always the fattest in the room. However, no one is looking at me as they are watching themselves ( in the mirror). Give it a go and you might be surprised.

How are you doing shar59?

Slow but steady thank you Wakywoo. I did start the couch to 5K and was doing OK with that until one of my knees started playing up, so I've rested for a couple of weeks. I'm debating giving it another go today but on a second hand treadmill I've bought and fast walking on an incline rather than running. Don't know that my joints are up to any pounding these days!

How are you doing?
