Hi I'm calorie counting using my fitness pal & am allowed 1200 calories per day. I'm really struggling with the right combination of carbs/fats/proteins. Any ideas what combo is best to lose weight?

1200 sounds very low. Have you looked at the NHS BMI calculator? It will give you a range to stick to, taking into account your activity levels.

Hopefully an admin will give you newbie info soon. But welcome to the forum and good luck!

Hi Nicmic

Welcome to the weight loss forum.

1200 calories seems a bit low, use the BMI checker to see what your calories should be for your height, age and weight. The recommended amount is usually 1400 calories.

Take a look at the Welcome Newbie post in the Pinned post section at the right hand side or at the bottom if your on a mobile. Have a look at the nhs 12 week plan, many members have had success following this plan. Use the BMI checker to work out your daily calorie allowance.

Below the Pinned posts are the Topics where members share a range of weight related subjects.

Take your measurements at the start together with a photo so you can see the changes on the days the scales don't move.

We have daily weigh ins so why not come along and join us. You can find the weigh ins on the Home page in the Events section on the right. Just click on the post in Events and record your start weight and any loss/gain or maintain for the week.

To get the most of the forum be active, share tips, recipes and experiences. Read some of the posts they are very motivating.

Have a good first week.

Hi nicmic I too have been using my fitness app along with the sister app withings. I have the 1200 calories a day so your carbs; sugars; fats etc are all ready worked out for you under the nutrition part of the app .so I make sure I do not go over what the recommended daily allowance is . I lost a stone and a half last year using this app along with not eating white potato and use sweet instead. I stopped eating bread completely. Made all my meals from scratch and incorporated some gluten free in to my diet. Plenty of white meats, veg. Fish with no batter or breadcrumbs. Sugar free fruit water and almond milk. Worked a treat and I felt so healthy .I did allow myself one cheat day but not over the top as we're all allowed a little something nice. I drank Lots of green tea too. Hope this helps 😊

Thanks Millie. I'm fed up today- 2 weeks being good & I've not list anything. Did exactly the same 2 years ago & lost every week! Managed to lose 2.5 stone then but feels like a real struggle now 😡

Your welcome hun. Only last night my daughter was saying the same thing and she was only having 1100 calories a day !! I told her to up then to 1400 for two weeks to kick start her metabolism then drop down to 1200. I'm only 5 ft 4 so I suppose it depends on how weight height etc as we are all different

Try not to let it get you down. I was where you are now back in Nov 2015 ,but with a little help from my mentor and perseverance it worked. Yes I have put half a stone on again but ill get back on that wagon Monday 😊. Don't look back and compare to last time the older we get the harder it is to loose .I'm 54 with 3 grown up son's and 6 grandchildren. My current weight is 8st 6lb but my ideal weight is 8 stone . Keep your chin up hun; just give yourself time .

No problem hun, it's not a massive weight loss you want to achieve but it can be done. I've just bought some new clothes that I know I will fit in to if I shift this excess flab .Just booked a holiday for next year , touring all around Italy including the island of Capri so that's my motivation which i think can help to keep you motivated. Yes see how you go the next two weeks and remember to measure yourself and take pics each week as sometimes we don't loose weight but we loose inches .let me know how you get on x

Hello and welcome Nicmic

I hope you have had chance to look around the site and at the suggestions Rose made ☺ Eating enough is really important and 1200 calories isn't very many 😕

Eating the right combination of foods is important and you are right to want to get this correct. This guide to portions might help

1200 Cals seems very low. What range does the NHS BMI calculator suggest for you? Aim for the middle of whatever it says. It's much easier to stick long term to a slightly more generous allowance and you will still lose weight, strange though it may seem.

BMI says 1505 to 1935cals per day. I'm struggling to eat 1200 per day tbh!

Well struggle a bit more and eat at least 1500. Add some healthy fats to your meals, Brazil nuts, avocado, salmon .. and you'll soon reach 1500. Years ago I lost weight under the supervision of my GP on 800 cals a day. This time I'm losing just as fast on 1500 a day even though I'm 30 years older and less active than I was then. If you read up on it the thinking seems to be that eating too little causes your body to hang on to whatever it can.

Thanks Hun, I'll keep going & I'll up it a bit more! Keep everything crossed! 😍

When I first joined I was eating more close to this amount and was losing nothing. Someone who has now left told me that not eating enough makes your body think you are starving it and turns what you do eat into body fat to keep it going. Fat weighs more than even calories. I thought it weird but upped the calories to the amount of my bmi and now am losing weight. I struggled at first to up the calories, but made myself eat breakfast as I never did before and also eat fruits and I eat between the middle and top because when you get to the closer amounts of your healthy bmi you can drop your calories to help you further to lose weight.
