im 46 next month and for the first time in my life i am classed as overweight. i have suffered with food issues since the age of about 13 and have done it all, laxatives, weighing every tiny bit of food. i have lived on a fake cream cake a day or rusks. i was prescribed Phenegran from the dr to assist with my insomnia. she didnt tell me that it makes you crave sweet foods and sleep constantly so for a month i ate then slept then ate then slept until one day i couldnt do my jeans up. i now have to try and lose weight because im OVERWEIGHT and not because i feel fat. i dont understand food and everything it entails so i have no damn idea how im going to cope. plus i hate exercise too. help!!!!!

Hi and welcome punkmum :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news

Take a look at the 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate

We run daily weigh-in's and you'd be very welcome to join us. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the home page, bottom on a mobile.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey

You can lose the weight from dieting its more important than the exercise. So you should be ok with that but you need to get an eating plan sorted out.

One of the admin should be on and they will point you in the direction of the nhs 12 week weight loss plan.

Good luck to you Punkmum.

thankyou.

But if you could force yourself to do some exercise (like walking) it would help. :)

Firstly , has a doctor told you you're overweight, or your scales, or just the fit of your clothes? I sympathise that you seem to have had a bad experience with food issues in the past, which others on here will no doubt relate to. In my twenties I'd go most of the day on coffee and cigarettes, then maybe a sandwich with chocolate or crisps "for tea" !! It is a wonder I'm still here to tell the tale.

As suggested by moreless check your BMI and see how much overweight you really are, then look at the calorie range for your size to lose weight. Only a careful balanced diet will get you slim and keep you slim. Crash diets do not work. Lots of support on this site, so good luck.

All three. The scales told me how much I weigh my jeans don't fit anymore and the Dr too. I have done my bmi. It's 26.

Well , if you're happy to get to a mid range BMI, say 22-23, then that should be quite possible ( I am guessing it is less than 2 stone ?)

Lots of people on here started with the 12 Week plan, getting them into good habits that are sustainable for life. I actually started my journey 3 years ago with a BMI of 28, then in one year achieved a slow but steady loss of 34 lbs. Since then I've been in maintenance with a BMI of 22.2 , and I'm a lot older than 46. So try it for starters, you may be surprised at how much healthy food you can actually eat!
