Hi, I'm a new member. Want to lose 10 kg in 12 weeks. Don't know how do I start? And I'm a carb addict. Can't live without rice, have to have rice at least once a day. Hope will get some advice.

Thanks in advance. :)

Hi and welcome Dim :)

You've stated that you are a carb addict, so having to have rice at least once a day, is the same as an alcoholic having to have one bottle of whisky a day, or a smoker having to have one packet of cigarettes, or a heroine addict having to have one "fix" a day. My advice would be to go cold turkey, the same as I did with cigarettes and alcohol, because once you get over the withdrawal, you stop craving your "fix"!

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you :)

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news :)

Take a look at the 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate :)

We run daily weigh-in's and you'd be very welcome to join us. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the home page, bottom on a mobile.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too :)

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

Hi Dim42 and welcome.

The 10 kilos in 12 weeks is potentially doable but if you don't mind, I'd caution you with giving yourself non-movable goals. If you don't achieve the goal that you've set your heart on it can lead to a negative reaction. Perhaps try setting a smaller achievable goal.

As moreless has pointed out, the NHS 12 week plan is definitely a good plan to follow, if you're not following it already.

I hope you get to grips with your rice requirements.

Wishing you all the best.

Good advice from Tiggerr and moreless . If you eat a lot of rice you will be getting a lot of calories. My Indian husband puts loads of weight on when he goes to visit his mum. I would agree that if you want to lose weight you need to change the way you eat. You have to get less calories - if you don't cut back on the rice then you will have to cut back on something else.

I would say 10 kg in 12 weeks is too much. It is possible, but it's healthier and more sustainable to lose a little less, say 8 kg.

Anyway - you have to find out how to substitute rice with something less calorific and starchy - e.g. cauliflower rice bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide... If you do have rice, make sure it is brown rice.

I feel I should come to the defence of rice, as I eat a lot of it, and still lose weight :)

If you have brown rice (my favourite is short grain brown rice) and boil or steam rather than fry it, it should be fine.

Have you tried keeping a food diary and looking at exactly where all your calories are coming from; because you make be blaming rice unfairly.

Hi good luck for your target

Replace rice with millets or broken wheat

It tastes almost same and low in carb

Have fun while dieting

Listen... I used to be just like you. As the good Brazilian that I am, our main dish back in my country is rice and beans. I couldn't even believe a meal could be a proper meal without rice. It was hard for me at first, the what helped me lose weight was food swap. I'm going to my 4th week of "dieting" and I already went down from almost 82kg to 76,4kg. I've never been hungry. What I'm doing instead is eating healthy. I did "slip" like 3 times in 3 weeks, but I reduce my food the next few days and it makes it up to it. But let me go straight to the point now... what have helped me with my rice addiction was swapping rice for Quinoa. I'm in love with quinoa and I think you should give it a try. It's a healthier substitute for rice. I've been almost a month without eating one single grain of rice and I can tell you that I honestly don't miss rice. You should definitely give it a try!
