Must do it this time

Hi all, I am a 58-year-old male and currently 57Kg overweight and classed as Obese with a BMI of 40.7

I have type 2 diabetes, insulin dependent. I have Charcot Arthropathy and have deformed feet and have poor mobility. I have recently been suffering from a stomach complaint made worse because of my diabetic neuropathy. Apart from wanting to loose some weight, I have been told that to help my condition I have to loose a significant amount and ensure it is a low fibre with high fluids diet.

Does anyone else have similar issues who could give me some guidance as to where best to start? I haven't as yet looked at the website to see what it consists of so there may be something here that may point me in the right direction.

Hello Chubster1959 and welcome to the weight loss forum ☺

I'm afraid I have no specific information regarding your health issues but can point you in the right direction regarding weight loss.

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you ☺

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news ☺

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate ☺

The majority of our daily weigh-in's are now full, but we still have spaces in Thursday and Saturday, which you'd be very welcome to join. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the home page, bottom on a mobile.☺

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too ☺

Best wishes

Anna

Hi and welcome. The NHS 12 week plan is not for you if you have to follow a low fibre diet because of your health conditions. I suggest you start by reading here: mayoclinic.org/healthy-life... or here medlineplus.gov/ency/patien...

Well done posting here! Think you need (you probably already have) professional advice on diet and weight loss. Given the fact a few of my close family members have type 2 diabetes, I think I know a little bit about the subject, a lot of people follow low carb diet with type 2 diabetes, in fact there's a community here about low carb high fat diet. But again, please seek professional help, your diabetic clinic should referred you to a nutritionist at least.

The important thing is that you control your carb intake, you don't need to go down to nothing but cut back on all refined carbs (that includes added sugar). Some may suggest you do the Low Carb High Fat regime but with all your other problems, I would not advise this without first seeing your GP as it may have an affect on your meds and/or other things that may be wrong with you.

Go and have a look on the diabetes.org.uk and Xperthealth.org.uk websites, they both have great information and work in tandem on educational courses for diabetics, which you may well benefit from attending..

Hello, I'm the same age as you, and can tell you that if you stick to a reduced calorie diet you will lose weight, in spite of your health issues. The best diet for diabetics seems to be pretty much the same as the best diet for non-diabetics, ie lots of fresh vegetables, moderate portions of meat and fish, little wholemeals carbohydrate, avoid sweets, chocs and alcohol, and cook as much from scratch as you can. Obviously you need to deal with your diabetes, but the actual best foods for you are going to be the same as for everyone else even though you need to be more precise with balancing out your insulin.

Hopefully your doctor and diabetes nurse can help with that.

Don't worry too much if your condition makes exercise difficult, as it is portion control of what you eat that is 90%+ of weight loss. Not being able to exercise won;t make much difference to weight loss, although it is good for you in many ways. So if you can manage a swim, or a stint on an exercise bike, or do a chair exercise routine in front of the TV each evening, that will help you be more fit and feel better in yourself. Plus it's something to do other than eat!

Believe it, if you don't manage your weight, things will get worse. If you do- everything gets better. You are still young enough to have many years of fulfilling life. Perhaps try to think about some of the fun things that you would like to be able to do and take small steps towards achieving them. Even singing burns calories (About 100 per hour) and you can do that sitting down.

Not what you're looking for?
