Happy New Year everyone. I have been following this forum for some time and trying to lose weight - note the trying lol. I am absolutely useless at calorie counting and am thinking of trying a low carb diet. Has anyone had any success on this type of diet?

I haven't been on a low carb diet as such but have noticed my relationship with bread and how it affects my weight if I eat too much of it.

My friend has bought me a book for Christmas that mentions low carb diets further down the pages, I too am hoping to reduce my carbs as I think my diet has too many of them at the moment.

It will be interesting to hear from anyone following a low carb diet as I would like to know more too.

Thanks for posting this question.

Bread is one of my many downfalls too but I have noticed it makes me very bloated. I would also like to lose 3 stone so am prepared to give it a go. Diet Doctor.com has been suggested as a good starting point. Good luck. Please post if you have any further suggestions - I need all the help I can get lol.

Hello lamb64 ☺ Welcome to the forum.

I also have to keep a close eye on bread as it's my favourite food! However, giving it up completely is not a long term option so I try to restrict the quantity. I also try to avoid white bread and find wholemeal suits me better. I find two small slices a day fits in well with my eating plan. ☺

I've done low carb in the past and lost 2 stone with exercise and small portions

That's the key for me

I find this works really well for me as I hate calorie counting. I am following paleo - I don't eat anything processed, no bread, pasta, could have some potato but try not to. I eat veg with lean meat or fish and eggs. I also have milk in one cup of tea but have green/camomile for my other cups. I drink lots of water - 3 litres. I lost 3 stone 4 in the 4 months up to Xmas eve (put on 4lb since then)

Good luck!

Wow well done. I try not to eat too much processed food and make my own bread so I know what's in it. I do drink a lot of tea with milk because that's the only way I like it but I know I don't drink enough water - can't stand it. Maybe I will have to learn to like it if it helps with the weight loss

Basically on the slimming world plan which I did and lost a lot and who's plan I am sticking with again.

As when you get the possitivity the other parts of the triangle exercise and healthy eating are easy and fall in to place

Going back to slimming world - you only have a small amount of bread or cereal included in it and although you can have unlimited pasta, rice and potatoes you really can't over do them as they are too filling and you should teach yourself portion control.

The rest is keeping the sugary processed food to a bare min eating more fresh lean meat, eggs, fish, pulses, fruit and veg and also making sure you also have a quota of Calcium either as skimmed milk , cheese yoghurt etc -this is portioned controlled and is especially important for building down stores of calcium in the bones to help prevent osteoporosis especially so as you enter the menopause.

it worked for me mainly because of not having the bread which always feels like a slippery slope

I don't mind answering questions if you want to find out a little more. !!

Thank you for your reply. I have tried Slimming World in the past and didn't get on with it. I am not sure whether it has changed but it used to have lots of low calorie foods including yoghurt which I find far too sweet. It just goes to show we are all different and what works for one may not necessarily work for someone else. Just got to find a way that works for me. Good luck with your journey

it depends on your taste buds I guess and how you use it - you plan your own menus

i prefer my savoury foods to sweet foods and I love veggies get some bargains at lidls and so I quite often blitz chick peas with lots of different herbs and spices and use that as a snack with carrots and celery

yoghurt yes your right they are always talking about muller lights ! but I actually prefer natural and add blueberries raspberries and a small teaspoon of honey

melons cucumbers strawberries and a few other foods actually burn fat off so really speed loss up.

i did loose 4 stone in a year with exercise lots of swimming and walking but after I lost my mum in april I just turned to any comfort food and wine and into a couch potato with depression and thats what it didn't teach me coping mehanisms so thats why I joined this forum

I guess its what works for you and thats important

This is a useful site with lots of advice.

My husband has done very well on a low carb diet but I found that I needed more than him. The key has been working out how many and what kind of carbs to eat. We rarely eat bread and try to vary the types of carbs we eat.

Perhaps try drinking water with a slice if lemon or lime?
