Just join on Monday at 15st 8lbs, BMI 34.7 and with commitment to reduce those figures!
I retired 2 years ago, went to Weight Watchers and lost 2 stone in 9 months - so far so good....focusing and supported but then it got routine and focus went.
My mother then went into hospital and care home and died 6 months later and I just gave up watching what I ate. Guess what, the 2 stone returned.
But the commitment has resurfaced and I have really been encouraged and moved by the all the other people who are writing their experiences on this website.
Have been calorie counting since Monday ( average of 1600 per day) and using all the things learned at Weight Watchers and weighed in today 15st 3lbs.
So thank you all so very much for just being there and sharing - I don't feel alone or helpless.

Hi SueElr
Sorry, I have only just spotted your thread! Otherwise, I would have said welcome much sooner!
Welcome to the forum, very glad to have you on board! I am sorry to hear about your mother, that's terribly sad.
I am glad to know you're now ready to lose weight and I hope this place will help you do that in a positive manner, it's great for support and we have a giggle too!
Sorry for your loss, we all need to refocus at times, having already lost 5 lbs, you've made a great start.
Autumn is on its way, a good place to lose weight, I always think it's easier than the icecream and sugary treats, I know lots will disagree with me on that.
I am very sorry to hear you lost your mum, its understandable that the last thing on your mind was your own diet. But now welcome aboard. Your weight watchers meetings will have taught you a lot, but the advantage of this site is that you can check in for advice or support day or night, out on the move, wherever!
Being retired ( I am too) has pros and cons. The pro is that we have more time to take walks, prepare healthy meals etc, but the con is that we're a bit too close to those snacks in the cupboard and those treats we keep in for the grandkids and visitors!
Still, you have one week underway and you're succeeding ! Well done. It may be a slow journey but slow and steady is good. Some people lose a lot of weight quickly but then give up .
I had 2st to lose too, it took me ten months to lose it all, but slowly is easier to maintain. Ive now been maintaining my healthy weight for sixteen months and you can do that too! 😊
Thank you. I agree with your comments. I have a few self-defeating stories around food built up over the years like most of us I suspect.
The truth is, I now accept without doubt, is that if I eat less calories than I use, I will lose weight.
However, to change my long-held habits and to keep it simple, I think it is important for me to be knowledgeable (calories), be aware of the food and advertising industries agendas to promote their interests and be aware of what I tell ourselves about food. It is also very important to have support and sharing from others with the same commitments.
So again, I just want to thank you all for being the amazing people you are.
If you haven't already discovered it, a lot of us on here also use the app " myfitnesspal" it is so simple and calculates calories, carbs etc for you, and keeps a daily diary . Without it I doubt Id have lost and maintained.
I am keeping a calorie count manually and have just bought a Good Housekeeping book on calories etc. and on your suggestion have registered with the app you recommended. So! that should do it! ; ))
You have had a difficult time, it is never easy to lose a parent, no matter how old we are 😢
You are doing all the right things and deserve success 😊 Have you checked your BMR (metabolic rate) on the NHS site which gives you a target calorie allowance? This is often more than you would think, and it's important to eat enough so you have 'somewhere to go' as you lose weight 😊 And if you are anything like me, you want to eat as much as possible and still lose weight!! Lol 😊
I am a big fan of WW, the plan I follow now is very similar to their old 'exchange' programme, but more generous. I like to know I am eating a good balance of nutrients 😊
Thank you for your thoughtful reply; good points about calorie allowance and 'somewhere to go'.
Nhs choices says for my BMI around 1600 calories. MyFitnessPal says 1200 calories and is useful for diary keeping and nutrition. I will continue at 1600 and see how it goes.
Maybe look at those again. If MFP says 1200 then I'm guessing you set your profile as INACTIVE and for the maximum loss per week? You can increase that on mfp to take into account your exercise. Generally most people with 2 or 3 stone to lose can do it on 1400 until they get to the final half stone or so, which may then need only 1200
Thank again you for your points. I did set my profile on MPF as lightly active (standing up most of the day) and an aim of 2lbs loss per week. I have updated to a loss of 1lb a week but there is a server problem so haven't got the new calorie level yet.
I want to commit to 30 minutes walking a day so when I do, I will update the website and I suspect it will adjust that 1200 upwards also.
Just re-done NHS and yes, I misread. Daily calories should be between 1600 and 2000 per week and that is to maintain not to lose.
