Any advice please?

Hi.  Newbie here! I am fed up! I gave up smoking last year and it was a doddle compared to loosing weight. I have yo-Yo dieted for years and I am now the heaviest I have ever been. I go from binge eating because of stress and anxiety with added amounts of boredom to eating nothing all day and then just eating my tea in the evening. I can't get it right...

I have spent 00's of pounds on counsellors and slimming world, weight watchers, pills, shakes etc and nothing seems to work for anymore than 2 or 3 weeks.

How can I beat this? My head says I need to cut out this and that and I'm really confused. How can I start and continue on a good track?

Thanks for reading! 😐

I am a year smoke free too, so well done on that! Have you downloaded the 12 week plan? I've been doing it for 2 weeks and lost 4 and a half pounds by counting calories. Looking forward to week 3, hope to lose another couple of pounds, I am finding counting calories gives you more interest in what you are actually eating and cooking which I am enjoying.  This forum helps too, everyone is really helpful and supportive. Good luck!

I've just downloaded the plan. I think I can get my head round it too. I also think your right, as counting calories will help me have some sort of control.

Well done on your loss! Good luck for the next week 😀

Hi and welcome Nm :)

You've come to the right place. We've all arrived here after a less than perfect relationship with food. The reason why it's easier to give up smoking, than give up eating, is that you can't give up eating for good, you have to eat to survive, therefore you have to learn to regulate and moderate your eating habits. No mean thing, when the body is designed to encourage you to eat the foods that give you the quickest hit possible ie sugar and fat.

I'd like to suggest you read our newbie thread and to follow the link to the NHS 12 week plan. It's easy to follow and designed to teach you healthy eating for life. You can find it in the pinned posts section to the right of your screen, alongside several fun and motivating challenges :)

I'd also like to invite you along to our monday group weigh-in, as it's friendly, non-judgemental and supportive. This is the link

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to shout out.

Looking forward to following your progress and wishing you all the best :)

You start by finding out why?   From what I read you seek comfort, ok so it gives a fix, fat or sugar, then you get fed up/ bored.   Be occupied, books are great for that, worry beads to keep your hands from nibbling, and take that journey as to how and why you relate to certain foods, the childhood habits and suchlike!

Start with NHS plan, and ask yourself what you really want, picture it, seek and plan, lots will help you here too, only you can achieve all of this, with help it's possible

Oh my, you are so right! I do seek comfort. I crave comfort food all day and I use it as a weapon and punish myself with it too. I am reading so much info on here and it is making sense finally! I know what I want. I have downloaded the plan too 😀

Hi Nuttymummyoffour (love the name) Firstly well done for giving up smoking. I hope this forum can help you stick with it this time. I have managed to keep to my calorie allowance (just about) each day and have lost a stone in 9 weeks. In counting calories you can still have some treats and eat the same as everyone else but you just need to manage your portions and keep within your allowance. The first 2 weeks are the hardest so you have usually done the hardest bit! I believe it needs to be a lifestyle change and not a diet otherwise what usually happens to me is once I stop the 'diet' then the weight goes back on. I hope that as I have been retraining myself to eat the right sorts of foods and the right portion sizes that I will be able to maintain my weight once I reach my goal. Best of luck to you :)

Try not to skip meals as that encourages the cravings to kick in. Eat regularly but count the calories. Exercise more if you can. Also comfort eating is NOT a comfort long term - it makes you miserable, because you get overweight. Determine other healthy things to get that sense of wellbeing. Good luck, we are with you!
