Hi all I am really in need of some good weight loss advice! Just to give you a background I have been yo yo dieting for nearly 20 years now! I have had successful periods of weight loss and periods of weight gain. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes three years ago which was a complete shock (as most I am 2-3 stone overweight normally) and I relied on Weight Watchers at the time, and I lost two and a half stone which was brilliant and I have never had to have any medication to control the diabetes. I kept the weight off for a year whilst still attending WW but then they changed their system in Dec 2015 from Propoints to Smartpoints. This completely threw me as I could not cope with how difficult it had become, and I started gaining weight and skipping sessions. I have been struggling ever since and put two stone back on which is really frustrating for me.
I do exercise 2-3 times a week and I enjoy it, but I know what I eat is the most important factor in losing weight. I've even tried Slimming World and I managed to do that for about a week before I unraveled. I don't think I can sustain that way of eating. My personal trainer (I had one for a while but it is too expensive) said that SW and WW are all a waste of time and to count calories instead, she said they lock you in with "points" and "syns". The main benefit I found to going to these types of groups is the support I get. I must admit once I get to goal the weight does creep up again and I stop attending.
I am 43 now and very frustrated being 2 stone overweight, I know my main downfall is snacking but most of my snacks are pretty healthy, I just eat too much. The main problem I have is emotional eating, and I have noticed the link between whether I am able to diet or not to my state of mind.
I am tired of paying for slimming clubs and following regimes help!
Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.
Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.
Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the NHS BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.
To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.
Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.
We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.
It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey
Hi Princessleia29, I have been in your shoes, have a been a member of both clubs lost some weight then regained more and repeated this pattern for 30 years until I reached 6 stone over weight. Then in May I found this wonderful forum and since beginning my journey in June I gave lost 1 stone in 8 weeks following the NHS 12 week plan. All the info you need is in the reply from moreless.
You will find lots of support, tips, advice and inspiration on here. Good luck on your journey.👍😊
Thank you it's nice that someone understands what I've been through. I am getting excited by the 12 week nhs plan now!
This is THE place to be, lots of support, inspiration and motivational people - and no charge - what's not to like?
Seriously, come on here regularly and join in with things. Everyone is super friendly and so supportive.
You are right about state of mind being important and if i were you i would ditch the dieting (you have proved it doesn't work) and welcome a healthy lifestyle that is sustainable. Make it an adventure with lovely food and let food be your friend not your enemy.
Thank you that sounds like a plan
Hi Leia! You can definitely get a handle on your weight with support here! Hope you get a lot of good from the group as I think it is an invaluable resource! Join us on the daily diary and the weekly weigh in and you will find your mindset shifting over the weeks!
What I like most about this group is what made me dubious in the first place - there is nobody proponing a quick fix or miracle cure, and nobody suggests they have the code! It is just a community of people improving their health (and lives) by changing their diet and their attitude to their bodies!
I genuinely feel I have changed my outlook about food. I still slip up and I still have a lot of ground to cover, but because of this group i now see this as a life long change to myself and I am not freaking out about it all.
I was diagnosed with pre diabetes and was overweight by 2 1/2 stone 6 weeks ago. Quite a shock as I had not weighed myself for years
I searched the internet for information as to what this meant and found you can reverse the condition by weight loss and exercise
I have bought a copy of dr Michael Moseley's 8 week blood sugar diet and the recipe book. He explains the science behind the diet and spells out in clear terms the consequences of not changing your diet for life. He talks from experience as he was type 2 diabetic and he lost weight and reversed the condition ( book v cheap on Amazon or kindle)
It is not just a question of eating less but eating the right things and avoiding the things which push your blood sugar up rapidly. So no bread, sugar, white rice, pasta and limited fruit plenty of protein and nothing ' low fat' as they add sugar and starch. Also no artificial sweeteners as your body can't differentiate between them and sugar and therefore they contribute to insulin resistance
He is inspirational and his advice works. Your cravings for the wrong food fade and the Mediterranean diet is tasty and satisfying
I have gone from 81 kg to 72 kg in 6 weeks. I have bought a fit bit to count calories and steps and an exercise bike which I use in front of the TV
I aim to walk 10000 steps a day
I was given an NHS voucher for weightwatchers . I was shocked to see a table piled with their artificial products and people eating bags of WW crisps and snacks. There is a lot of silly chat about which alcoholic drink is lowest in calorie and " treats" e.g. WW jam and biscuit etc instead of concentrating on which food will be the most nutritious and best for your body
I hope this will be of some help to you because you can really do something about your weight and what better goal than better health?
Pcrw you could not have put it better in my opinion. I was diagnosed with prediabetes in January and have lost nearly 6 stone by avoiding sugar and processed carbs where possible, calorie counting and going to the gym. I am due to have another blood test shortly so fingers crossed. Good luck with your journey leia.
You have definitely come to the right place. I too, have tried both of these slimming groups but since using this forum, this is the best by far and i would never go back to those groups again. You will receive lots of support and friendly advice here
Wishing you all the best with your weight loss journey
