Is sweet potato a vegetable?

i would have thought its a root veg.....will look forward to knowledgable replies!
fab - the nhs diet i am following states that 2 egg sized of sweet potato is one portion, under the bread, other cereals and potato catergory and I can have a max of 7 portions a day. Therefore if I have porridge ( 9 tablespoons = 3 portions) a green banana = 1 portion. 2 slices of bread = 2 portions. i can only have 1 portion of sweet potato. If it is a vegetable I can have as much as I want? It is so packed with good minerals and vitamins. I have baked them and made crisps from them - confused why they are not a veg?

Hi Porky12,
I've found a link which discusses some opinions on this issue, which you might find interesting. I know the article is about potatoes mainly, but it does also mention sweet potatoes about three-quarters of the way down the article.

Hope you're enjoying the weekend.
Lowcal
Great question, I was wondering the same. Love it mashed or in a veg curry.
It's a starchy tuberous root vegetable, personally I would swap it for the bread.
thanks to you all - they taste yummy so even though they are slightly higher in cals than normal potatoes this time they win out!
