Last Monday I weighed 13 stone 3.6 pounds, and today I weigh 13 stone 4.8 pounds, so I've gained 1.2 pounds this week. I think the gain is hormonal, as I'm on my period this week, so I'm hoping it will go quite quickly and I might have a good loss on the scales at next week's weigh-in. I just need to accept this gain, and move on from it - sticking to my goals, and keeping positive. That's what I'm telling myself - although I admit I don't like to see a gain on the scales…!
I managed to keep up with my exercise goals last week, and did some nice walks, but I could definitely do more strengthening and toning exercises on my core muscles, so I'm going to try to concentrate more on that this week.
I don't have any batches of soup left in the freezer, so I need to make some more - but maybe with this sunny weather I might look at eating more salads instead.
I hope you'll join me for this Monday weigh-in, and share your experiences. I hope we all have a great week ahead.

Morning lowcal. I expect you're right about the reason for the apparent gain. Move on and up, you'll see a difference next week.
I've been on the smart recipes website and there are a few tasty dishes to be had there. I made a batch of the chicken couscous so will divvy it out for meals in the next few days. There's a tuna salad there too. You might like it.
Thanks for your encouraging words. I think your chicken couscous sounds really tasty, and I'll take a look at the smart recipe website for those tasty dishes - I do like tuna salad, so I'll definitely take a look. Thanks for the recommendation!
Good morning everyone, good morning Low Cal. Your weight gain is minimal Low cal and if you weren't on your period it would be a loss, so keep working at those core exercises this week and next weigh in will show the reward!
I lost a further 2.6lbs this week and not only 1/2lb off my all time lowest weight BUT 3.5lbs off that elusive 5 stone weight loss mark! Being realistic and not expecting to make it next week but will continue with my three times a week visit to the gym and watching my calorific intake.
Keep up the good work everyone and have a great week.
Congratulations on your 2.6 pounds loss this week, that's really great!!! Wow, you're getting closer to the 5 stone weight loss mark - hopefully you'll be there by the end of this month if not before!
Thanks so much for your encouraging comments - I will keep working at those core exercises, and hope you enjoy your gym sessions this week.
Great attitude and common sense. That gain will definitely reverse next week.
Thanks for running this thread. This is the first time I have posted on it but I have been tracking it for weeks while I dithered and panicked about my weight.
A very warm welcome to you, and thanks so much for joining us for this Monday weigh-in. Thanks also for your very nice comments - much appreciated!
I am glad you've posted today, because that's often such a big step, and hopefully has felt ok to do so. Congratulations on your weight loss - you're making good progress in your second week, really well done.
Wishing you a great week ahead.
Lowcal
Having your period will definitely affect weigh in so try not to feel disappointed as you are doing so well. Have a good week and keep up with the walking as that always works for me more so than any other exercise ☺
Many thanks for your support, and yes, I'll definitely keep up the walking - I enjoy that exercise very much, and definitely helps me to feel better and healthier.
Wishing you another great week ahead, and I'll check out your progress at your Friday weigh-in. Good luck.
Lowcal
Good morning Lowcal. Sorry to hear about the slight gain but you're right not to let it upset you as we know that weight fluctuates, especially around time of the month. As a case in point, if I had weighed in yesterday I would have been telling you that I had lost 2 lbs but today the scales say that it is only a 1 lb loss - I have put on a lb between yesterday and today despite being within calorie limits, eating only good things and going for a long walk y'day!
I'm not unhappy though as I have moved down another size - I looked out the next batch of clothes from a couple of years ago and they fit! This is good timing for going on holiday next week
I won't be weighing in next Mon due to holidays but will note my weight on Sat before I go and will be here the following Mon to check in with you.
Have a great day and best wishes to all the Lowcal-ers
Congratulations on your 1 pound loss (which I know was a 2 pound loss yesterday!) - I think you might have gained a pound overnight due to the fact you did that long walk - I often find if I do a longer walk that I gain some weight - possibly due to the swelling of the body in response to the exercise and more water weight - but it soon goes away, so I suspect you'll drop that pound again very quickly - all being well.
Congratulations for moving down another size - how exciting that you can now choose from the next batch of clothes - great timing for your holiday next week.
Have a wonderful time on your holiday, and will look forward to catching up with you when you get back the following Monday.
Good morning all! Sorry you have gained Lowcal, i am always effected by my hormones. Like you said am sure it will soon go and sounds like you are doing great with fitness!
as you know my week started rocky with some wrong decisions, but by using support on her I got back on track. Also Lowcal your advice to me to still weight in today, even though i was away the weekend was invaluable. Before you said that i had thought i just wont weigh in so i didn't worry at the weekend. However, i had a fantastic time away and have still lost 3lbs this week.! Made some good decisions away refusing cheesecake and chocolate cookies etc. Did over indulge on alcohol!
also people at work have really noticed this week and put on summer trousers which are too big. Would love to lose 7lbs in just under 4 weeks ( as big birthday). Heres to a sunny week.
Thanks so much for your encouraging words. I appreciate them.
I am so pleased to hear that you've got through the rocky start to your week, and that you are back on track. Glad you chose to weigh-in today, and that you had a fantastic time away. Congratulations on losing 3 pounds!!!! That is so great!!! You definitely made some good decisions declining that cheesecake and chocolate cookies. Really great.
It's so great that people at your work have noticed this week - and that those summer trousers are actually too big…!
Great that you have the incentive of your big Birthday to work towards - and good luck with your goal - you're doing so well, keep it up.
Well I stayed the same this week. My average calorie intake over the week was 1420 and I walked everyday for an hour.
Next week I'm going to try and make all my calories healthy ones, there were a few glasses of wine and a slice of cake in last week's total! Maybe that'll do the trick.
Well done for maintaining your weight this week - and for managing to stick to your calorie intake and also doing your walking. You should hopefully see a good loss on the scales next week, just keep going.
You've got a plan for this week, in terms of ensuring that your calories in are healthy ones, and so I hope you have an enjoyable and healthy week ahead! The NHS plan includes a really nice recipe for Banana Bran Fruit cake, which has some healthy ingredients and is a tasty cake - I am hoping to make another loaf of it this week - and I'll freeze the portions so I can keep it longer.
Morning! Have had a great weekend - went to see Take That @ the O2!!! They were amazing!!! Weight wise I have stayed the same, I won't be weighing in next week as I'll be on holiday with no mobile signal (or scales!!!)
Good Morning Lowcal & Fellow Monday Weigh In Followers,
It's always disappointing when the scales don't show us what we want to see but it sounds as though you understand why you've had a small gain and that you're on top of getting it under control. I always feel sorry for the ladies who suffer a gain due to their period, age doesn't have many positives but no monthly suffering is one of them!!
Well I have to say I've had a very good week, I've stayed well within my calorie allowance each day and those calories I have eaten have been healthy ones, I love fruit, veg and salad so this is my time of year. This past week I've really noticed that I'm looking and feeling much slimmer and the clothes I'm wearing are now too big, so it was with much delight that I unpacked clothes lovingly put away because they were too small, & I think I detected a hint of concern as my husband asked me yesterday how much more weight I wanted to lose. Surprise then when I stepped on the scales this morning and remained the same weight as last week...is this the dreaded weight loss plateau I read about on the NHS website yesterday for week 11? I think it may be. I am a little disappointed but not despondent & hopefully next week will be a more positive result & I'm certainly going to enjoy wearing all those smaller size clothes this coming week! Have a good week everybody.
Thanks so much for your supportive words. I really appreciate them.
I love the positivity in your post today, and can tell that Summer is definitely your time of year - great that you're enjoying those salads and vegetables and fruit - really healthy and full of nutrients.
Great that you've noticed how much slimmer you're looking, and that you enjoyed packing away those looser fitting clothes, and can now try those smaller clothes.
I am glad you're not despondent about staying the same on the scales, because that does happen sometimes, and maintaining weight is much better than gaining it - I think you'll see a loss on the scales next week, all being well.
Enjoy wearing those outfits, and have a great week.
Yes, the difference will be evident next week, I think you're right - just keep going and that plateau will give way to a loss on the scales.
Keep going, and have a great week.
Lowcal
Hi Lowcal. Sorry to hear you didn't lose weight this week, but hopefully your efforts will show on the scales soon. As you know I've really tried to kickstart my weightloss by following the NHS 12 week plan. Last week I was 11st12, and this week have lost 2lb to 11st10. I promised myself I'd try on my size 14 jeans again when I got to 11st7, but was impatient and have squeezed into them today! Feeling really good and determined.
I haven't had a perfect week, but 5 out of 7 days I had 1500 cals or less, went running twice, and I did 15 mins strength exercises. I tried to remember exercises I used to do in a circuit training class a couple of years ago, and set them up in my flat, 90 seconds for each, e.g. squats, situps, and some very pathetic pressups. But I really felt the difference the next day. I'm also still doing the tupperware salad thing, layers of rocket, cherry tomatos, radishes, red onion and cucmber, as a sort of lunch accompaniment to carry with me. Hope you have a great week, best, Ruth
Thanks for your supportive comments. Much appreciated.
Congratulations on losing 2 pounds this week - that's a great start, and well done for squeezing into your size 14 jeans earlier than you anticipated - that's fantastic!!!
Great that you're feeling really good and determined, as I'm sure those positive feelings will sustain you to achieve another successful week. I don't think I've ever had a perfect week, there is always something that comes along somewhere that presents a little challenge or two - you sound like you've had a really good week - with your exercise and keeping within your calorie allowance. Well done. I calculated my average total calorie intake this week, and it was 2,678. But my average net calorie intake was 1,502. I must try to get my total calorie intake down a bit, as I am slipping higher lately.
Your mobile lunch arrangement sounds really good - I've bought some salad ingredients so hoping to have some tasty salads for lunches this week.
I find press-ups quite difficult - but I do think they give good results. I'm trying to do more crunches as well, and can definitely notice a difference in my abdominals.
Im no pressups expert either! I managed about 5 pressups, then lay exhausted on my front for the rest of the 90 seconds. Next time I'm hoping to manage maybe 6 or 7! But I think just mixing up different kinds of exercise is good. I'm not counting my exercise towards calories though. I don't know if that sounds a bit mad, but I'm not overdoing the exercise, and am really trying to be careful with meal choices. Maybe that's why I go over a bit some days...
Hope you make the changes you want to this week. Think of all the people carrying secret salad pots around. I saw a lady eating a home made salad in a jam jar the other day
Hey everyone, seeing some good results so keep up the good work. My weight is 14 stone 12 so a 1lb gain. I am sad that the scales just aren't moving down. My fat % has gone from 46% to 45% so I am hoping that is at least a good sign.
I followed NHS 1400 calories for 5 out of the 7 days and then weekend was a failure.
I went to a bday party on Thursday night, leaving before they cut the cake at 12am (some weird tradition) and breathed a sigh of relief because it was a massive chocolate covered sponge cake.
But Friday they called saying they had saved some for me! I am thinking ok, just one slice not bad.
When they delivered the cake straight to my door (showing just how much calories follow me around and insist to be consumed so it can settle itself on my belly and arms) I almost died. It was a massive square slice that could serve around 6 people.
I do hate waste, so down goes some of the cake (the rest is in the freezer haunting me with its existence) and I fall into a pit of despair.
So basically it just went down from there. I went to the cinema to see Spy (very funny) and had nachos AND popcorn. So I think all the hard work from the previous days were cancelled by 2 days.
Today I was reading about slimming world. Has anyone tried it? Apparently you get unlimited free food which includes things like rice, potatoes and pasta...hmmmmm!!
I am on Slimming World and it is working for me. Whilst you can have unlimited rice, potatoes and pasta, you have to make sure that when you have them, at least 1/3 of your meal is made up of vegetables. These will help fill you up and control your portion size. It's great because it encourages you to eat healthy home made meals as it is only these which are unlimited.
Sorry to hear you had a 1 pound gain this week, and also sorry to hear that that massive slab of chocolate covered sponge cake seemed to follow you to your door! Glad you enjoyed your trip to the cinema and enjoyed the film.
You did well to stick to your resolve for 5 out of 7 days, and I honestly don't think that hard work has been cancelled at all - yes, the weekend was tough, and you made some choices you regret in hindsight, but please don't let it put you off getting back on track and facing the week ahead.
I haven't tried Slimming world, but I know people who like it, and they find it helpful. I occasionally buy their magazines, as I really like the look of some of the recipes.
I weighed in. Haven't been terrible but haven't been fantastic had some chocolate crisps etc. I was naughty and finished the leftover choc cheesecake my 8 yr old couldn't finish. Tempted again - still it was less than half! Still I have kept my weight down to 11st 1lb 8 oz. I want to get it down to straight 11st my Monday next week so will leave that as my goal for weigh next Monday.
Well done for keeping your weight down to 11 stone 1lb 8oz - you're getting close to your goal for next week of being 11 stone. There are always quite a few temptations around, aren't there - hopefully over time you'll be able to avoid some of them and gain confidence over being able to make healthier choices.
Wishing you a good week ahead, and good luck with your weekly goal.
Hi Lowcal. Ah those pesky hormones! It's dispiriting when the scales go in the wrong direction for any reason, but at least where hormones are involved it's not a real weight gain, and you can probably look forward to seeing a bigger drop next week to make up for it.
I'm a case in point. Last week when I was bloated with hormones I reported I'd only lost 1lb, despite my best efforts. This week I've managed to lose 4 and a half pounds! I'm sure what actually happened is that I continued to lose weight at a steady rate all along, but the water retention masked it and made it appear as if nothing was happening for a while. This is very much a game of patience isn't it?
I do feel very positive about the NHS weight loss plan – it really is working for me and although the changes are slow and steady, they are life-changing. I'm just beginning Week 5 today and have lost more than 11lbs over the first four weeks, and have now come below 15st, so I'm really chuffed. I still have a way to go but I really notice the difference when I do my country walks – I can walk up steep hills now without gasping and wheezing and turning puce, and I can climb over stiles without getting my leg stuck on the top! These may be trivial things but psychologically they make a big difference.
However, I was struggling to do the recommended amount of "strength activity" each week, having run out of heavy jobs to do in the garden. There's just no way I will ever join a gym so I invested in two sets of dumbbells (3kg and 5kg) and am trying to do 15 minutes or so a day with those. I've no idea if that's a good regime or not, but I need to find something I'm able to stick to, and that means doing it little and often rather than attempting full workouts which I'll soon get bored with.
Best of luck to you and to everyone else for the coming week.
Firstly, Congratulations on losing 4.5 pounds this week - that is really great, and like you said, the previous week's weight loss was probably masked by your water retention, and then you were able to enjoy the full weight loss, thanks to staying on track and keeping patient. Really well done.
It's great that you're enjoying your walks more, and gaining agility in terms of getting over those stiles, and going up those hills. I think it's great that you've bought the dumbbells - as I'm sure those 15 minutes or so a day using those will do you good. It's finding out what works best for yourself, and you sound very positive and motivated, which is so great to hear.
Thanks for your encouraging words - I definitely hope to lose some weight next week - and I'll be doing my measurements on 10th June - so I'll hope to report those at next Monday's weigh-in as well - I measure myself once a month.
Have you tried the 7 min app or fitness dvd (like Jillian Michael's 30 day shed). The 7min is quick and gets you out of breathe with the jumping jacks and the press ups..Not sure how effect 7min a day is but better than nothing I guess. Exercise is my biggest downfall. I work 7am-5pm - sitting, desk work and then cook in the evening so there is just no way I want to be exercising on top of that
Would be great to do a weekly weigh in - might make me feel a bit more accountable! 10st 3 this morning. Target is 9st 4 and weight loss to date is....zero! Keep starting every Monday and giving up every Tuesday. I work late a lot and usually end up getting a takeaway in the office for dinner rather than prepare something healthy in advance, also have a lot of weekends away this year due to friends getting married so keep falling off the wagon. tired of not fitting into my clothes though and have a big birthday in September so am keen to start the 90 day plan properly and stick to it for longer than two days this time....wish me luck
A very warm welcome to you, and thanks for joining us for this Monday weigh-in. You've got the incentive of a big Birthday in September, so that should hopefully help you keep on the wagon, rather than falling off it.
Good luck, and hope you have a great week - and that you last longer than 2 days! At least you can see the risky times - i.e. rather than getting that takeaway, maybe prepare something healthy that you can have when you get home - something you can heat up easily and quickly in those incidences when you work late.
Hope you have a great week and hope to see you for future weigh-ins.
Lowcal
No loss, no gain for me this Monday. But I'm feeling and looking healthier and happy with that. This week will be more of a challenge for me because I'm away on a conference so I won't be able to exercise much and food will be trickier to control.
Great attitude Lowcal. You are right - the hormonal thing makes a big difference.
Congratulations to Candystripe, Mags, Gonti, Vickster, PeaQueen, Ruth and others.
A very warm welcome to you! It's great that you've joined us for this Monday weigh-in - and you're definitely not the only newcomer here today, it's so great to see some new people joining in - I hope you're enjoying your time on the plan - wow, you're on day 64, that's amazing.
Congratulations on your 2 pound loss this week, that's really great. Also, fantastic to hear you've lost about a stone since starting - you're half-way there already.
Thanks for your kind words - this is a really supportive community, and has such a lot of great people all with similar goals and great spirit.
Oh the joys of womanhood - periods, bloating, PMT - all sent to try us! With any luck next week will show a good loss for you. The Weight Loss Gods have been a little unkind to me also - I have lost 1.5 lbs taking my weight from 11st 2lbs to 11st 0.5lbs ggrrrr! I just wanted to be in the 10's (visualise a toddler temper tantrum stomp here please!!)
I had a bit of a wobble over the weekend and ate too much and now I am kicking myself as I am sure I would be in the 10's if I have stayed virtuous!! Oh well - maybe next week......... I have very unfortunately given in to temptation and had 600 cals (oh my!) of cake today - who would have thought that one slice of birthday cake could amount to that? I will be gyming later to try to help with damage limitation and then start afresh tomorrow.
Congratulations to you for losing 1.5 pounds this week, and how frustrating that you're sooooo close to being in the 10's but not quite there yet - I can feel your frustration - but just think how happy you'll be next week as I'm sure you'll be in those 10's, all being well.
Wow, that Birthday cake you had today - all 600 calories of it - I hope it was a delicious tasting slice of cake (it should be for all those calories) - I'm sure you'll work hard at the gym later to try to help with damage limitation.
Wishing you a great week ahead, and hopefully you'll be breezing into the 10's before you know it!
Hi Lowcal you have the right mind set to get you over this small hurdle. 1.2 lbs is not a lot at all and as you say it may just be hormonal and you have noticed a pattern develop around this time so it's nothing to worry about I'm sure. I know you possess the strength and determination to succeed on your journey and you have many supporters here to help encourage you to get there.
The strength training and toning exercises this week sound like a good plan and so does the soup or salad. I have just come from my gym workout and concentrated on strength and cardio as promised and had the best workout and have left feeling so much more positive which will take me into tomorrow with a good positive attitude.
I would like to wish you a very enjoyable week ahead with a successful result at the end of it. Lowcal you can do it hun
Thanks so much for your very supportive words, which I really appreciate.
Great to hear you've just got back from your gym workout, and that you enjoyed your work-out and are feeling much more positive - that will definitely help you to start tomorrow feeling good.
Thanks for your positivity, and encouragement, and here's to a great week for all of us ahead.
Hi, today is a new day and next week a new week. Its hard to keep motivated sometimes when its 3 weeks forward one week back, but you have shown time and again that you can do it. Well done and good luck for this week
Thanks so much for your support and encouragement - I really do appreciate it - and I hope you have a great week yourself - I'll keep an eye out for your posts to see how you're getting on.
Lowcal you know how those nasty little scales can be instruments of torture! Get your own back on them next week! Morning folks couldn't bring myself to step on the scales yesterday but went on this morning and I have managed to maintain at 10.131/2. Off to Nantes on Thursday so hoping to take it easy, and leaving meal for son Wednesday 😫. On the plus side I posted my Ascot dress rehearsal pic on FB and lots of positive comments, although that said they are clearly my friends who are not going to say you look like shite 😜......... Have a great week all and enjoy losing those poundsx
Only a very slight gain for you this week and totally unsurprising under the circs so I'm sure you will be reporting a loss next week.
Last week I weighed 11st5 and this week i have stayed the same. This is a reality check for me as up till now I have been losing a steady 2lb each week. Last week I slipped a bit which comprised of a drinks night a meal at an Italian restaurant and sugary treats on Friday and Sat. Having said that I would say my slips were controlled insofar as small portions of sugary treats, slimline tonic in my gin and choosing a lighter option meal out at 430 cals which was still very tasty.
I think because my slips were controlled is why I have managed to maintain instead of gain - before starting this journey I would have thought what the hell if I started slipping I.e I had no food and portion boundaries which is why I ended up obese. I am trying so hard and have lost 2 stone so I'm not prepared to go back to that place - this thread is so supportive so hoping this will help with my resolve not to return to my old ways.
Good luck Lowcal for a decent loss next week and to all the other folk posting on this thread xx
Well done for maintaining your weight this week. It certainly sounds as if you controlled those 'slips' and therefore minimised any damage from them. Maintaining instead of gaining is good!
You've lost 2 stones in total, and that is really fantastic!
Thanks so much for your supportive words regarding my gain this week - I really appreciate them.
