Emotional eating

I'm so glad I found this site. I'm on the 5:2 diet and its going okay ish. Started at 120 kg. Now I weigh over 105 kg. I just find that whenever I get some success I tend not to believe that I can really achieve the full weight loss. So I seem to stop and put it all on again. Only more. I know it's yo-yo dieting. It's more of a psychological thing. I'm 55 and when I was younger I was soooo fit and weighed only 11 stone. I have a target of 85 kg which is my healthy weight. I'm so frightened I won't achieve it. Anyone else feel like this?

Hey i find focusing on the overall goal of weight loss really overwhelming, i started with 9st to lose was really disheartening, but by breaking it down into smaller goals to aim for it was much more manageable, im now down 3st 11lbs and going strong. You have come so far and worked hard, dont give up on yourself, no one else put in that work, you did!! You are 20kg from your ultimate goal, try focusing on 5kg at a time, then reward yourself when you reach your goal each time, it will add up quickly and you will get to your goal. I worry everyday that i wont last the distance but i try to take it one day at a time, and enjoy the changes in my body and use the positivity in the changes and work i have put in to fuel me to keep going, i also use this site for support and motivation and it really helps. Good luck with reaching your goal

You're so right. You know it really helps to have someone tell you these things rather than read it in a magazine. WHich you do but you don't connect somehow. Yes I will focus on just the next 5 rather than the whole load!

Welcome, I hope you find what you need in this community. You'll find many motivational posts here!

Congrats on your 15 kg loss! Don't let those negative thoughts ruin your efforts. Focus on losing a bit more every week, even 1 lb is a loss in the right direction.

Good luck!

I'm 55 too and I've told myself it's time to grow up and stop eating sweeties etc. to cope with the upsets in life. The weight isn't going to come off that quickly but one pound off a week is good enough for me. It took me 30 years to get 2 stone overweight so I think I owe myself some time to get rid of it. Keep in touch with us for support. I find reading the replies and posts gives me the determination to carry on. :)

What's the 5:2 diet please

Hi It's where you eat normally for 5 days and only consume about 500 calories on the other 2 days of the week. Try this link.

I like it cos it means that I only have to worry about dieting for 2 days of the week... so today I was on a fast day and planned it for when I'd be really busy. Just had cuppa soups and hot zero cal drinks. Then this evening I had a decent meal (actually it's surprising what you can eat for around 400 calories. I had cauliflower rice, loads of veg and a tin of sardines with some sweet chili sauce. So I didn't exactly starve. And during the day I also sneaked a clementine!

It's really helped me --though I did fall off the wagon. I use a calendar with stars pinned to a kitchen cupboard and give myself a star for each fast day.

Hope this isn't too much information....

You're doing so well - it is really tough and you should be proud of yourself. Don't feel bad if you have the occasional slip up. If you can, get out for a walk everyday, that will help you feel better psychologically. Use an app to measure your steps. Well done - you're doing brilliantly and don't forget it! :)

Thank you so much for your response. I know what you mean about flexibility. Was just talking to a friend about this and it seems that it's all about having a good relationship with food. She also said to me that sometimes we do engage in dysfunctional eating and that's just what it is. But that's all. If it happens once in a while she said don't beat myself up about it. By the way how much have you lost?

Bit like you in that as I get near to a target I think I can't achieve it and eat as if to prove that I was right in my belief. If that makes sense, its like a vicious circle!

You are already setting yourself up to fail if you start worrying that you wont make it. Dont think of it as a diet but a lifestyle change. Look at it as eating better for a healthier you. Its not going to be "ill stop and I wont put the weight back on" if you dont. This is the new you, the you that respects the food you eat and the exercise you do. Yes you are cutting down more than you want to eat and yes that will eventually end but if you dont switch your mind to this is the new me, you will slip back.

That is a GREAT reply about respecting the food you eat - I got so bored yesterday with eating more healthily, but managed OK.
