Bread and others

Now I've got 2 stone to loose ideally a bit more but that's enough in 13.5 weeks for me. I was thinking about cutting out carbohydrates but swapping white pasta for brown. Has anyone done this??? Is it worth it? I'm 13.5 and was 15.5stone and 16 and 5.11ft just wondering if my cutting out bread and White pasta/rice would help?

Hi :-) I'm not necessarily recommending this - just sharing my experience. When I have lost weight in the past I have cut out bread, pasta, rice etc almost completely. I haven't given up carbs completely as I have a big bowl of porridge and blueberries in the morning - slow burn carbs and it fills me up til lunchtime - and I eat fruit during the day. I replace the pasta, rice etc in my evening meal with extra veg which fills me up, is less calorific and has more goodness. I've just checked this out online and apparently a cup of cooked white spaghetti is about 220 cals while the brown stuff is 174 cals - the brown spag is also much better for you it still contains all the nutrients. Brown spaghetti is only slightly lower on the glycaemic index at 42 as opposed to 46 for white spaghetti - it's slightly harder for your body to break down which is good. Hope this helps :-)

My experience has been that cutting down on carbs, like bread and pasta, is a good way to lose weight. Switching from 'white' to 'brown' is always a good idea, because of the increased fibre.

I find that I now get most of my carbs from vegetables.

You'll probably need to experiment to see how much in the way of carbs you need to cut out. Good luck, it's worth having a go.

I have changed to wholemeal like pasta and bread. We gave up on brown rice (did not like it) and we like to enjoy our food. Pasta and bread are only once a week. I eat Cruskits instead. I went on a diet once where I cut out carbohydrates. I lost a lot of weight but put it back and more when I returned to normal. I often wondered if it did not trigger something in my body, as from that moment my weight went up and up and up. Only now, learning good eating habits on the NHS program, can I eat well and loose weight in the process. I think the best for you is to experiment and see what works. Remember you need fibre.

If you ever want to go back to a normal diet that includes carbs, don't give them up now. Just let your body stay used to eating them (especially the brown versions of rice, bread etc) and you'll never have a problem in future. I'm eating carbs and losing weight too, it's a question of eating a balanced diet now and in the future, a diet in which no food is forbidden. That's freedom.
