rice: how much rice should i put in a... - Weight Loss Support
rice
There is a bit of leeway but I used to, when I ate rice and pasta go on around 70g per person. I guess it depends on how big your mugs are but I just measured out half a mug (which holds 300ml of liquid) with rice for you and that weighed around 140g, so based on that I would say 1/4 of a mug would be closer to a portion. Failing that do you have any scales, as this would be a more accurate way of doing portion control.
thanks i,ll try half a mug and see no i dont have any scales
Just experiment don't ever be afraid to throw some away if you need to, I know that is extremely hard to do if you are on a budget and if you've been raised like lots of us of a certain generation to "Waste not Want Not" but really it's key to changing your eating habits.
Also keep in mind that around 25g of the final cooked rice will end up as sugar (glucose) in your system once metabolised.
is that glucose good for me or not??
Steve that would require a complex response and it would be subjective as currently there are lots of views when it comes to sugar and its place in our diet, the dieters current metabolic health would also be a significant factor.
At this stage in your weight loss journey from what I have gleaned from your posts, you are using the a standard calorie restricted diet to lose weight, loosely where those calories come from should not matter for that purpose though for health reasons they should obviously as much as possible come from whole, unprocessed foods. You will probably find though as you continue further on your journey and get closer to a normal healthy weight that you may have to look at things like Carbohydrate Restriction in order to continue or maintain your weight loss, so then yes, you would not want to be having too much glucose in your diet.
I was simply drawing your attention to the fact that a good % of rice ends up as sugar to help bolster your knowledge, lots of people don't realise that things like Rice, Potatoes, Wheat ultimately contain sugar. I had a conversation this week (in the real world) where someone I know was convinced that their days food intake which consisted of Porridge, Several Pieces of Fruit, A Tuna Pasta Salad and a Chicken Curry and Rice was sugar free.
Remember Knowledge is Power!
thanks again i,m going to have to find this stuff out and read up on it thank god these people on here that can tell us
75g is a portion. When I first weighed it out I was shocked by how little was there but it us plenty when you've eaten. If you were wanting a larger pirtion try brown rice as ur's only around 85kcal for 75g
thanks i only eat brown rice
My ex mother in law who is Iranian used to use a cup and this worked for me too, a mug is too much
Not sure as cups vary in size. just use the same cup and adjust accordingly. You will eventually find an amount that suits you.
I read on a Weightwatchers website that 60g ( normal portion) measures 2 handfuls for a woman. would that be 1.5 handfuls for a man ??
How are you getting on ??
thanks i tryed half a mug last nite and it was a bit to much
first week was good this week not so sure i,m doing the same as last week but added in 2lts of water a day but somethink dont feel right i know that sound strange but thats how i feel we will find on on thursday nite when i get on the scales
HI STEVE,
I HAD A WORD WITH MY PRACTICAL HUBBIE AND HE SUGGESTED USING A TABLESPOON TO MEASURE YOUR RICE. I TRIED IT OUT AND YOU GET 20g RICE FOR I TBSP, SO 3 TBSP OF RICE IS 60g.
thanks hun
i think it would be uncooked
I measured it on the scales for the recommended amout on the box, and it was only 1/4 of a mug for one person, which doesn't seem much, but that is one reason why we might be overweight, because we see large portions as normal!
Also I'd only ever eat wholemeal rice now.
thanks
