I'm be wary here. I think it's a matter of opinion. Basmati rice producers want us to buy their product so they'll say anything that cant be disproved. As we're on weight loss I'd go for whole grain rice - more fibre.

As it happens 1 portion (75g) of cooked basmati is about the same as many other types. 262 calories. It's not about so called superfoods, it's about balanced diet and balance lifestyle. Surely if basmati helps you avoid chips then it will help - provided the rest of the meal isn't swamped in fat, salt sugar and cream.

That's not a medical answer but I hope it helps.

Does help a lot. I felt guilty yesterday after having some basmati rice with milk and was good the whole day at work got home after a long shift had the rice. ....ouch.....

In that case, don't feel guilty. We do a lot of research into calories per portion. Bu put simply it's 4 cal per gram. Fat and alcohol have loads more and some foods seem to stick more than others. Alcohol for instance slows metabolism so you don't burn it off as quick and has lots. Half a pint of beer or glass of wine both have 200 cal. Neither help you feel full or have much nutrient. To be avoided.

Great thanks

I really like basmati rice, even though I know brown rice is healthier and more filling. For me a portion of rice is about 50g (before you cook it), any more than that makes the meal too calorific. You can add brown lentils, peas, barley, herbs and little flecks of fried onion into the rice to bulk it out, and then it starts getting healthier and also much tastier :)
