Hi, recently Ive gained a lot of weight ( 1 stone in 2 months) and I'm worried. I've been trying to lose weight for over a year now with dieting and exercise. I suffer from sciatica and my back hurts on a regular basis. Sometimes when I do exercise I over do it and end up hurting myself. I don't know what to do any more, please help me.

Hi Tara, Have you tried Slimming World? I got a referral last year from my doctor's surgery so it was free for 12 weeks, but I have kept going after this as I've found it is really helpful to have the consultant available for advice and the group support. I've lost over 2 stone since last May now, and this is with changes to my eating only, as I've had gout so haven't been able to do any exercise alongside it. It might be something to help you lose some weight until you are able to be more active?
Thanks Helen I have tried slimming world and weight watchers. It went ok for the first month but I gained weight even though I was following my diet. So I gave up on that, I found a local herbal life fitness camp was really helpful because they showed me that my weight gain was muscle. Unfortunately they only did a 4 week fitness camp then moved away.
Sorry to hear you are having problems. Have you been taking medication to cause such a quick weight gain?
You could look at the NHS 12 week plan, or of you feel you may need something different, have a look at changing what you eat, and cutting down on some carbohydrates. This is a useful site, but you don't need the amount of protein suggested, unless you are a body builder.
I have been taking a lot of painkillers (cocodamol or tramadol with ibuprofen 8 times a day) also it could be that when I exercise I hurt myself then sleep/rest for a day and eat 3/4 meals whilst I take the painkillers. I have tried the shakes diet and cutting out certain foods. I use to drink a lot of milk and eat a lot of cheese so I cut that out and it didn't do anything. I also stopped getting takeaways and eating out and that did nothing as well. I started making my own smoothies and soups as well but they made me feel ill and the weight loss wasn't worth it.
I sympathise as I too suffer from chronic pain, and have gained a stone in a short period of time.
I read that chronic pain sufferers, also can become depressed and eating and weight gain is a symptom of this.Perhaps a visit to your GP would be helpful?
I started anti depressants and feel less inclined to eat but I'm still struggling to lose weight.
I asked to be referred to a physio and she is amazing giving me exercises to strengthen my back, but I am only allowed to do a small amount of walking on the treadmill and to stop when it becomes painful.Rest days in between exercise she also recommends.
My trainer at the gym used to say that weight loss was 70% diet and 30% exercise, so I am focussing on my diet now and using my fitness pal app on my phone which allows me to keep track of my calorie intake and daily nutrient allowance, it also allows you to set reminders to log your meals and snacks.
I hope that has been helpful for you, don't be too hard on yourself, take each day as it comes and try to focus on the positive aspects of your daily weight loss journey. xx
I had to go to hospital today because I was on a bus the braked abruptly. A nurse and doctor checked me out and said that its a trapped nerve and inflamed muscles in my back. They gave me some dihydrocodine and sent me on my way. I feel like I can't continue on like this any more and on top of that my dog Harri is dying
