Hi and welcome to the site. Are you counting calories or going to a class? Exercise is always good - but find something that you love doing - I love walking. Don't forget to keep a food diary and take your measurements. My bmi was 38.2 at the start and now 34.7 in 12 weeks. It can be done. Still a way to go. Good luck.

I would suggest you go on the nhs bmi calc which will tell you a range of calories you should consume. The lower end of the range will average out if you are totally honest with your food diary at 2lb a week. Don't do a one size fits all diet like the 1400 cals a day as at first you will be too hungry and later on if youlose a fair bit it will slow down too much. As you lose weight re assess your calorie target each month.

There are several apps that can help, I prefer one that is British and non interactive so i use My Meal Mate, it's on android.

There are 2 American ones that are popular My fitness pal and My fat secret. MFP is very American based and as the name suggests is tilted towards those who want to exercise. It has a very interactive basis which is unmoderated so there is a lot of rubbish talked on there especially regarding pseudo science. If you can ignore all that it's ok but it can be disheartening and confusing.

MFS is also not moderated but is a bit less full of rubbish. There are some much nicer people on MFS but there is still a lot of pseudo science on there.

When it comes to counting calories the most important things are to be honest and accurate. I would suggest a set of digital scales will help.

Other tips:- don't weight daily you will get disheartened, research shows people who weigh daily lose less weight.

Don't waste your money on clubs they are designed to make you lose weight as slowly as possible while encouraging bad habits. WW doesn't work for many people and encourages you to buy their overpriced products which you then stop buying but are in the habit of eating sweets and crisps afterwards. SW encourages overeating which when you start eating a more mixed diet again makes you regain weight rapidly.

Try to be more active in your daily routine, move more, stand more, walk more, do everything a bit quicker. This helps burn calories and get the metabolism going.

good luck

Hi k86d87

I'm a personal trainer and have had many clients over the past 10 years in similar situation but there is light at the end of the tunnel and you have just taken the first step towards it by wanting to do something about it.

To improve your health and fitness you only have to do two things. Eat healthy and exercise regularly.

Our metabolism is like a fire, when you start a fire you put x amount of logs on. To keep the fire burning you have to add some logs every couple of hours. This enables the fire to keep burning, same with metabolism.

If you kick start your metabolism in the morning with a big breakfast it realises it can now start to burn energy, feeding it every two hours or so will keep using fuel so your metabolism has been sped up. If you don't feed the body regularly it will think you are starving it so it will retain body fat in case of emergencies.

You want to make your last meal of the day your smallest because you are getting ready to shut your body down for rest. If you have excess fuel to burn it will automatically store as body fat, so try and eat three hours before you go to bed so food can digest and go easy on the carbohydrates.

Combine this with 10 - 20 minutes of cardio each day and you will soon be dropping the lbs and getting back into shape. Its hard to get started but once you do the results will be enough to motivate you to do more. Go to ptprograms.com.au where you can download free exercise workouts to do at home.

If you are determined about it, it will work out for you

Hia and welcome. I could just feel your 'tone' while reading and just like SimonM said, it's all about eating healthy and exercise but the greatest challenge is how do we do this properly in order to achieve our target. In my current journey of weight loss, I have found that several things work for me. I go to the gym and attend varied classes 3 times a week, Total toning, a weight class and a zumba class; I drink 3- 4 cups of herbal tea a day, mainly green tea; I ensure half my food plate consists of vegetables- I always have spinach /kale.; I cook all my meals ( I am quite 'obsessed' with looking for new recipes that are healthy but tasty!). I have realised that once I have balanced meals, I don't have the need to snack, and if I want to, I have a piece of seasonal fruit (its cheaper!) to keep me going. Just like you, my BMI was my drive and still is . All the best on your journey towards better health.

Hello,

I had a bmi of 40+ and needed to lose at least half of my body weight, I still have a long way to go, only lost 7lbs so far but it's a start and already I feel so much better. What has worked for me is using My Fitness Pal as a way to log everything that I eat and drink, I don't use the forums on there as they're full of rubbish. I now eat breakfast and find that I'm not hungry at lunch time so I now go for an hours walk in my lunch break and keep some fruit handy to nibble on, i'm lucky in that my job allows me to do that. It's important to remember that there are no quick fixes, it will take time to get there so set youeself small goals, I have reached my first half stone, now i'm aiming for losing the first stone and not setting a time limit.

Good luck, you've made the first step.
