Can I recommend the 5:2 Diet as it's the first ever diet that has worked really well and, more importantly, the weight has stayed off since last April - I'd always yoyoed straight back up and more before. I lost three stone in six months. This is the programme that changed my life, BBC Horizon's "Eat, Fast and Live Longer" vimeo.com/54089463 and I'd also recommend Kate Harrison's book "The 5:2 Diet". My daughter started this way of life before Christmas and is also losing half a stone a month. You're only actively 'dieting' two non-consecutive days a week.
For calorie counting the best free app and website is MyFitnessPal.
Whichever diet you choose to do, at the end of the day eat less, move more will mean you will lose weight. I belong to weightlossresources.co.uk and find that very helpful. It has a huge database of food, which is being added to all the time and also an exercise database. I log all my food and exercise and it does work.
Doing the 5:2 diet doesn't mean that on the 5 days that you are not fasting you can eat whatever you like. You still have to stick to a calorie allowance so for instance if you are on 1500 cals a day you would do 500 cals on your fast days and then even the 2000 you have saved over the other 5 days. At the end of the day you will be eating the same amount of calories just in a different way. It does suit some people, but personally I find calorie counting and trying to move about more helps.
I do have bad days when I'm not as good as I should be but I make up for it and don't beat myself up over it as that can demotivate me .
I lost my weight by following the 12 week plan and exercising because I know that if I get too hungry I tend to binge eat. My way is to plan meals, weigh portions of rice, pasta etc, not to get too hungry and use smaller plates. If I go out for a meal I eat what I want from the menu but I have found I generally eat less now anyway. I have lost about 1.5 stone over a year but often eat more than 1400 calories. I could have lost it quicker had I been stricter. I still want to lose another few pounds but I find now I am exercising a lot more - c25k and going to the gym and aqua-fit, I get hungrier. I know though that on my current regime it will go.
Whatever you choose, make sure you are eating a balanced diet and exercise. It is fantastic when you start to feel so much better and people notice too. Whatever you decide good luck and keep posting.
I joined yesterday and download 12 week plan but I have decide to start properly on Monday, any amount of weight I lose will help but before I was ill I weighed 10st now 16st so I have along way to go.
If you want to keep a food diary and log everything that you eat and also log any exercises you do, then I would respectfully suggest myfitnesspal.com which is totally FREE unlike weightlossresources.co.uk which, after an initial 24 hour (aren't they generous) free trial actually COSTS you £14.95 per month!!
Myfitnesspal is, in my humble opinion, a brilliant website and any questions I have had have been answered extremely quickly and with very good information.
As long as you are honest with what you put in, you get an honest answer back!
Noom couch is very good on android, you can log food and it will tell you how many calories you have left. it will also give you more calories if you log exercise and you can log your weight loss which can be seen on a nice graph.
i have stopped eating between meals and go to the gym 3 times a week and have lost 4kg in 6 weeks. i feel this is a good way as it's something i can stick too and if i go out for a meal i can just do an extra gym session that week.
