hi All i need to lose 9-10 stone to be healthy and to have my op for a hernia but where do i start any advice out there for a easliy give up

Hi Racheal27,

If you look on the NHS weight loss pages you will find some really good advice. Also, read the different posts and question threads, and you'll see the type of things that people have found useful in helping them to lose weight. I have found that it is helpful to keep regular contact on the site, and that the support and help of other people here is invaluable.

Maybe write down what you eat and drink each day, to keep a check on your calorie intake. That can be helpful.

Set yourself smaller goals as well as a big one, say you are 15st 6 focus on losing that 6lb first, good luck

I too have to lose 8-9 stone iv been calorie counting but doing small goals so cutting it down gradually and not beating myself up if I have a bad day just focus on the next one iv lost 10llb in 3 weeks.

I brought a food and exercise daily diary from Amazon and I put everything I eat and drink in it :) good luck xx

Hi I also need to loose about five stone, but Im going for a pound a week any more and that's a big bonus. Go for small goals that are achievable. Yes you will have a week or two along the way when you put some weight on, but dont beat yourself up. Also I dont call it dieting, its healthy eating and calorie counting. Im going to eat all the nice things at christmas because its christmas BUT in smaller portions, and save be sensible. Good luck and keep us posted on how your getting on.

Hiya Rachel,

I too had around 9 stone to lose, that was almost three years ago. I didn't set myself a time limit and had been losing weight slowly and steadily up to this summer when I had managed to lose 4 stone.

I didn't gain much over the holidays, ( About 1/2 a stone) but was finding it hard to get any more weight shifted, until I found this site. I now get weighed and post my results weekly, I read and share other posts. This, along with strict calorie counting ( have a look at "MyFitnessPal" ) has helped me lose a further 13 pound in 7 weeks.

I'm sure the support of fellow "losers" has helped me and I hope it will help you too :-)

I don't calorie count. It's too time consuming and depressing. I've just ruled added sugars out of my diet and removed all snacking. If it's gone, it's gone and you can't be tempted to eat too much when you are allowed a little bit. Plus, no one needs sugar. There is evidence now it actually causes diabetes (which, when you think about it was fairly obvious) and once you've kicked the habit, I promise you you don't even miss it. I've been off sugar and refined carbs for 2 months and have lost 2 stone. Only five stone to go!

Actually, I should be losing 8 or 9 stone too and if I continue to lose weight naturally after losing 7 stone, I will, but I've no particular reason to push myself. Your hernia might actually be a good thing!

Oh, and most people on this site are on the NHS plan. Penel appears to be on a similar plan to me and uses this very helpful site. authoritynutrition.com/how-... Not to say the NHS plan doesn't work, but not everything works for everyone. I had a real addiction to sugar and carbs (I still seem to have a real problem with carbs and cannot leave toast alone!) The only way I could lose weight was to eradicate the evil white granules completely, and all their replacements. No aspartame, no saccharine, no sweeteners of any kind. If you eat sweeteners, your brain searches for the calories and creates cravings. Type 'sugar bad' into you tube and you'll find numerous doctors telling you exactly that. I would also encourage you to listen to a long and dull lecture with some really startling statements in it (usually just in time to wake you up!) youtube.com/watch?v=vRe9z32... I don't agree with him on everything and still restrict my fats, but I have converted back to full saturates after years of thinking poly unsaturates were doing me good. I feel sooooo much better. Your brain needs a small amount of fat to function so good quality fats in small amounts are healthy. I often eat a cherry tomato omelette for lunch cooked in butter now and am still easily losing weight.

Good luck finding the plan for you. Try the NHS plan. It might be right, but bear in mind there are other options.

I kind of adapted the NHS plan to meet my needs adn my lifestyle, much as Divided has.

Basically, I "chucked out" the sweet, fatty, creamy, fried, stuff - biscuits (I limited myself to a maximum of 2 lite Digestives daily), cakes, bread (down to maximum 2 slices daily), fried food (used spray, rather than oil and substituted scrambled or poached eggs for fried ones), confectionery (I used to always be at the KitKats / Twix / Marathons, etc).

I also took control of my portion sizes - from super-size to human-size - and weighed portions of rice, pasta, cereal, etc.

I also upped my fruit and veg (especially green veg), upped my fish intake, and upped my exercise/activity.

I didn't specifically calorie count - though I watched the calorie content of foods and learnt the things to avoid. And I weighed myself daily, so that I'd be able to see which way my weight was going and not just on a Friday (or whatever).

If you read the NHS live well lose weight web pages, you'll see that whilst that is a bit idiosyncratic, it's not that far off of what the plan says.

Hi

We are very similar as i,m sure just like me you have done every diet going,when I was younger I wanted to lose weight to improve the way I looked and to wear sexy clothes but now I'm getting older I have changed the way I think and now it's purely for health reasons,considering your situation try and focus on how much better you'd feel after the operation,I think once you've had a few positive weeks you will start to take control of your weight loss and gain in confidence,the very best of luck!
