Can anyone recommend a low fat, low sugar breakfast cereal?

I have been having Asda Vitality (like special k) but it's got loads of sugar in. I sometimes have porridge or toast but really like a crunchy cereal. Any ideas?

Most I've found have loads of added sugar, Shredded Wheat has nothing added the downside is that as the name suggests it contains Wheat.

Tesco's Free From Oat Muesli has no added processed sugar but it's not that crunchy either, the ingredients are; Oat Flakes (57%),Dried Fruit (30%) (Raisins, Dates) ,Sunflower Seeds ,Buckwheat ,Pumpkin Seeds (2%) I have it sometimes as an alternative to porridge.

Hi emzylou,

How about weetabix or oatibix, if you prefer that (personally I do prefer the oatibix). You can sprinkle a bit of oatbran on it too for a bit of a crunch.

Good luck with your weight loss efforts.

I have Oatibix these days (after a suggestion from Doikosp) - might switch back to porridge once it gets colder.

Good luck.

My fave is quaker oats with raisins or honey :-)

Lizi's Granola (original recipe.) It has less sugar than all the cereals I checked and was really nice.

Oh, and is sold in my Asda, but that could be because it is a local product. They have a website where Lizi shows you what goes into the granola and where to buy it. Easy to google.

Total greek yogurt (not the honey one) sprinkled with chopped hazelnuts.

And perhaps a banana added.

Hi angel

Bran flakes have no hidden extras and is nice and crunchy, i also add mixed seeds to mine for extra crunch, i mix my own and they are a source of vitamins and minerals as well.

I mix pumpkin, hemp, quinoa, golden linseed, sunflower seeds, i also use this mix when i make oat cookies for added crunch, but you can use it in salads or sprinkled on any meal.

Add some dried fruit with them and raw porridge oats and yoghurt instead of milk, that is a tasty, crunchy alternative!

Take care and angel blessings xx

Not sure which brand of Bran Flakes you are buying but Kellogs have sugar, salt and honey listed as ingredients.

look at the ingredients on the side of the box. Contains salt and sugar.

Mini shredded wheat. You can always add fruit or sweetener. Bottom line is you are in control of any added salt and sugar. Also because they are small its easier to count the calories.

I say try it and see. Special k has a lower gi but i definitely get a sugar spike from it. No size fits all.

I have smart price bran flakes and yes they ha e 11g of sugar per serving but not honey or salt.

As lakesfan said read the label

Now you mention that, I noticed some of the supermarket brand cereals have a lower sugar content than Kelloggs, but if you are adding linseeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds etc you might as well just be eating Granola that has a lower sugar content anyway.

I know. All excessive macronutrients are stored as fat, be they fat carbs or protein. You either use it or store it.

Could you add something crunchy to the porridge- apple slices or few nuts?
