Undiagnosed PCOS

I'm after some advice... I went to a fertility clinic last year to check my egg reserve and have a scan to check everything was ok. I am single and 36 and thinking of my options to become a mum.

I had a blood test for my AMH levels and it came back at 25.31 pmol/l

I was told at the appointment that could mean i have PCOS and i didn't really think much of it at the time, but since i have really been noticing that symptoms i have always had and just thought were normal for me could be related to PCOS.

I have unwanted hair on my face, i have put on weight and i really struggle to lose weight even when i'm eating healthily and exercising. Not sure if it's a related symptom but i'm also getting hot sweats all the time and chronic headaches.

I am wondering how others got diagnosed and what treatments you have all tried and what has worked for you.

I haven't yet spoken to my GP about this yet.

Thank you in advance! 🙂

Ellen

Hi Ellen, To be diagnosed with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria you need to have two of the following...: Hyperandrogenism (this is where you have a more anabolic hormonal profile, more similar to what men have (elevated testosterone) and this leads to facial hair etc...), Polycystic ovaries (cysts on ovaries) and Oligo/anovulation (menstrual cycle disturbances).

The weight loss/weight gain thing can definitely be related to PCOS but doesn't mean that its not possible to lose weight it just changes things slightly. I'd advised getting your doctor to check your hormone profile and do a scan to check for cysts on your ovaries. If you are diagnosed with PCOS I'd be more than happy to help you improve your symptoms but its worth checking that you actually have it before I recommend any PCOS type interventions.

Best wishes,

James
