Hi everyone, I’m new here! Just last week I was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries after going to my GP and getting bloods etc. Came off the pill (rigevedon) in February and have yet to have a period. Husband and I have been trying for a baby but obviously it’s not going to be easy. He’s to do a semen analysis before I can get referred to sub fertility but the first appointment he could get is end of November...is this normal? Will I have to wait for any sort of treatment until after that? Anyone with any tips for me! Thankfully I’m a healthy normal weight...sorry for the long post, guess I’m just looking for some reassurance/timescales!

Hi!!

I can feel your pain don’t worry!

My husband and I have been TTC since January with no joy. I was diagnosed with PCOS last month and have been told that I need to get my BMI down from 33 to 29. Before they can start you on any medication like Clomid the NHS likes you to have your BMI to 29 or below. I would certainly recommend this if your BMI is above that magic number. For PCOS you need low carb and high protein.

PCOS made me feel ugly, unattractive and angry at my body for letting me down. It’s not your fault you have it and there are a so many things medical professionals can do to help you. PCOS is hereditary so certainly not your fault! I see loosing the weight as my first chance to do something for my future bundle of joy.

The other thing my fertility Dr mentioned for me to do was to take vitamin D (the best quality you can get) and take Inofolic Alpha. It is expensive but really helps people with PCOS and it meant to help improve egg quality and cycles. You can get this from fertilityfamily.co.uk

Things are slower at the moment because of COVID but it will all happen for you I am sure. It’s a horrid situation to want something so much and to have to wait for help but it will be ok, your already taking positive steps being on here.

X

Hi yup, unfortunately this is normal. I have PCOS and got my first appointment with the fertility clinic in July 2018 and I had lots more tests-HSG, MRI and lots more bloods and ultrasounds.

I’m now 38 weeks pregnant after 6 rounds of clomid and 4 rounds of IVF. I seem to have been a particularly tricky patient the doctors were def scratching their heads.

As for things you can do. There is a book called ‘it starts with the egg’ that gives good advice. I would read some NHS guidelines so you understand what you are in for, the doctors and nurses need to do lots of tests to make sure the meds they are picking are the right ones for you so expect lots of repeated bloods as they work out your cycle, if you are ovulating, womb lining thickness etc. I kept a little notebook where I would write info I’d found and questions to ask the doctors as it’s super overwhelming.

Good luck! And feel free to ask any questions. Xx

It took us over a year to get pregnant, everytime was November /December on holiday or Xmas, so more relaxed time I guess. I think stress has a big part of not getting pregnant. Not having a period isn't a great sign, I would assume that means you are not ovulating.. I'm not a doctor though and there are tests to see if you are. There no harm in testing the semen, but for me no periods seems like an obvious reason why you are not pregnant yet. I have PCOS but do have periods, I didn't when I was younger though, so it is possible for them to come back again.

Look at the NHS website on PCOS and it can give you some suggestions. I take Alpha Inonfolic, I got pregnant within the first month of taking it once, I have been taking to for about 4 months now though. Its supposed to help fertility and PCOS symptoms.

Thanks for your reply and congratulations on getting pregnant! Agree it’s not a great sign I’m not having periods...just waiting for a letter to come through with an appointment with fertility! I will defo look into that supplement, do you have any side effects whilst on it? I also suffer with pretty bad ibs and don’t think I could cope with anymore stomach upset! Thanks 😊

I don't have any side effects no. Thanks but all the pregnancies ended in miscarriages, so not so much congratulations. But all I'm trying to say is you can get pregnant and there is hope. I'm now 36 and overweight, so my miscarriages could have something to do with that.
