I have a telephone appointment with the gynaecology department of my hospital following a doctors appointment where I asked to be prescribed metformin for pcos. My periods are massively irregular and I suffer from acne. My bmi is in normal range and my hirutism is manageable. I am just wondering whether I am likely to be prescribed metformin or not as I believe it would help me regulate my cycle. I'm reluctant to go on contraception as I have side effects from every one I have tried (both types of pill, coil, implant and injection) has anyone with similar circumstances to be been prescribed it and has it helped? Thanks

Doubt Metformin will regulate your periods .I was on it for 20 + years and recently stopped as doubt it actually ever did any good. You need to be in a high dose though and ask for slow release one if it makes you nauseous as it usually does. Good luck.
I'm currently taking metformin 1500mg aday been on it 3 months now. I'm currently 18 days late so it dont think it does do anything to your period, I think they only really prescribe it if your ttc. Well that's what my gp and gynecologists, but every place is different x
Just an update on this... I got metformin and a course of progesterone to induce a period. Then just on metformin afterwards. Just had a 31 day cycle so it appears to be working as my last was over 230 days before starting! Definitely worth pushing for the doctor to let me try it
