Hi guys, I've recently joined this site as a recommendation from a friend. I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice.
I've been having prolonged periods since the beginning of may. The 2nd week of may i started my period and I was on it for 8 days. This is unusual for me as my periods are only maximum 5 days. After the 8 days it stopped then I came on again after 1 week. This time i was on it for 14 days. Stopped for another 1 week then came on again and was on it nonstop. In the 2nd week of august I saw a doctor who gave me tranexamic acid which I took for a month didnt stop the bleeding. I had a blood test which showed I have coagulation problems. I also had an ultra sound in which the sonographer told me I have pcos. Bearing in my mind my mum had womb cancer 12 years ago which she had a hysterectomy and radio therapy for. The sonographer for that reason also done an internal scan.
The doctors did a hormone and thyroid function test, the thyroid levels are fine but hormone a little out of range. The GP is certain that its pcos. From my research I noted pcos stops periods but in my case my period is prolonged. Is this normal in rare cases? They started me on birth control pills 2 weeks ago, it actually stopped my period, I finished taking the pills on monday and my bleeding started again the next day (Tuesday). But since yesterday it's been unbelievably heavy. Even up till now I am having to change my pad every 1-2 hours. As I've stated the GP is certain I have pcos, is this normal whats happening with me? I would highly appreciate any tips of advice that anyone has or of anyone has had a similar experience please share with me. Thankyou

No we vary massively in symptoms, some ladies have prolonged periods as well. If you use facebook, you may want to join the PCOS UK (Verity) group which is a private group so none of your friends will see what you post. You may want to query ladies on there and see if anyone has any suggestions on what worked for them
Prolonged periods of bleeding are very normal with pcos. I have them but luckily not overly heavy at the moment. I had heavy periods between ages of 28 and 39 but this has eased a bit now. I generally get prolonged light bleeding or spotting with about a week free of bleeds in between. People seem to be affected to different levels. Have you looked at the tulips cups etc, the reviews say they are good.
Hi... I have PCOS.....and coagulation problems also.....have lupus anticoagulant... for years I rarely had a period ....then in the last couple of years I started having extremely heavy periods.. needing to change tampon /pad every hour. I now have the mirena coil which has helped with other syptoms of PCOS and have a very light period every now and again.
Hi debs, thankyou for your advice. Surprisingly enough my doctor hasn't given me any tips or advice for this hence why I'm just constantly paranoid. My blood tests did show I have coagulation problems but again they haven't offered treatment. I'll bring this up on my follow up appointment next week. Again thankyou your response as its rather reassuring when you know your not alone x
I dont find doctors to be very helpful....especially the male ones... they tend to think youre overreacting and lack empathy.. i accidentally saw a female doctor and she was so much better
I had 2 doctors review my ultra sound. The first one was male, he looked at the scan and said theres multiple cysts but he said it's not pcos and my bleeding is due to the coagulation issue I have, the 2nd doctor i said looked at it and said its "borderline pcos", the bleeding is due to that and not relevant to my coagulation. Bearing in my the 1st doctor is the same doctor who constantly ignored my mum's symptoms before she got diagnosed with recurrent uterine CA.
Your absolutely right. Male doctors do lack empathy, he said my prolong bleeding is also due to stress..so I question is it normal to bleed for 3 months straight, he said with stress yes its "normal" 😒
I am pretty much always on my period! Tried various pills and nothing is really working for me. One doctor says he is sure that this is what I have but another says it’s ‘suggestive’ but I am showing all the symptoms and had an ultrasound which showed these results. Tiredness is a really bad side effect of PCOS for me as I’m always sleeping and napping throughout the day!
Try myo-inositol supplement , along with folic acid and vitamin D. This helped my sister who had 1 ovarie removed due to pcos. Do your own research beforehand though
I’m sorry to hear what you’re going through. Incidentally, this has been my experience since February of this year. I decided to see my GP about it in April.(having accepted at first that this was just PCOS being PCOS and it would go away on its own ). She tried me on tranexamic acid as well. I took it on and off and it’d relieve the bleeding for a few days and not much after that.
So the past few months have been blood tests which obviously showed hormonal imbalances and iron deficiency. I insisted on getting scans done and the GP finally referred me for a trans vaginal scan. This revealed a thickened uterine lining.(bleeding for prolonged periods tends to be the cause of this ). I was immediately referred to gynaecology for a hysteroscopy(& endometrial biopsy) which i had done just last week Tuesday. The gyno observed the same -thickened uterus lining/hyperplasia. This condition if untreated for years could lead to uterine cancers. While I await the results of the biopsy, he advised that I lose the excess weight . Since my diagnosis in 2016, I’ve gone from a dress size 14 to 20.
So his recommendation overall was that if I lost the excess weight (about 30kg in my case) , my hormonal imbalance issues would resolve. He explained that there’s a link between having excess fat around the belly area and progesterone : oestrogen ratio and this being the cause for the excess bleeding. Anyway sorry for the long write up . The advice was basically, once I can get to a healthy weight , all these PCOS symptoms will tend to normalise. And I guess there’s some truth to it; as a size 14, I experienced none of the symptoms. I know each experience is different to the other but I thought I’d share with you if it’ll offer some insight. xx
