Newly diagnosed pcos

My 20 year old daughter diagnosed today over the phone with pcos. Concerned about future fertility problems and the fact that she has migraines that means she can't take some forms of contraception pills to help reduce the risk of womb thickening and causing abnormalities. She has previously taken a form that is compatible with migraines but didn't help regulate her periods. She hasn't had a period for over a year and half. Doctors didn't give any advice just said not curable and would refer her to a specialist. This could take a while and would like advise in the meantime as very worried

Oh no, I understand she is worried but it is not necessary to panic now! Pcos is not an immediate threat, so whilst a waiting time is annoying, it is not doing sth to her chances to have a baby in the future. Some people with pcos do not have any problems conceiving, some need a few meds to ovulate and for very few having a baby won't work at all. A good thing about pcos is that we usually have a lot of eggs even later in life, so it's not all bad news.

What she can do herself is excercising regularily, trying to be of a healthy weight and eating healthy food. For me cutting out sugars/low carb helps a lot. There is something like myova or another company whose name I cannot recall that produce tablets/powder with innositol that for some women helps regulating the cycles. In general that's all you can do. The doctors can do a few more things to fight the symptoms like maybe another pill or metformin treatment but this she can consider when she has seen an expert. They will need to check bloods and do scans and ideally check her for insulin resistance. They also can induce a period if they consider that sensible.

I hope all goes well. There are a lot of us out there, she is not alone with this! :)

She may have no issues conceiving, not everyone does who has pcos, it is extremely rare not to conceive just due to PCOS so she honestly doesnt need to even worry about that now, there is so much help available anyway. Our egg quality lasts better for longer too so we can conceive later in life (I was 36 when I conceived Noah)

Period wise, as long as she has 4 a year it is fine, you can get medication to force a bleed (provera).

The main thing is to get her diet under control to try and keep the symptoms at bay so follow a low GI type diet - one diet that I recommend is theanswertopcos diet as it can help hugely with symptoms and also weight loss if need be, I did it 10 years ago and have kept the weight off since then. The fatter you get the worse the symptoms can become so ideally just needs to avoid all white carbs, not have processed food and keep sugar to a minimum as these all make the symptoms much worse.
