PCOS TTC enlarged ovary

Morning,

We have been TTC for over a year. My GP did blood tests and had an intravaginal scan at the hospital. The scan came back as abnormal, they lady said one side was enlarged and both were covered in lots of follicles. We are waiting for my partner to have sperm test which he can’t get booked in for until June. I was just wondering what the next steps might once we have all results back and have been referred.

Thank you x

Have they put you on any sort of medication? I had exactly the same issue as you 2 years ago. We had been ttc for 1 year and I was then diagnosed with pcos. My ultrasound showed my left ovary was twice the size it should have been, plus both were riddled with cysts.

My GP put me on metformin which is a drug used to treat diabetes in the hope it would regulate my periods and control my hormone levels (basically so I would ovulate on my own). Do you know if you ovulate?

The metformin brought my periods down to around 34-42 days and I was ovulating every so often. I saw a fertility consultant who also asked me to have tests such as an HSG (where they flush dye through your uterus and Fallopian tubes to check they’re open with no blockage). Mine showed I had one tube blocked - but hopefully yours will be great! They do this test to rule any other issues out. After an HSG you are also more fertile! I got pregnant the month after my HSG but unfortunately had a miscarriage in the September. They wanted to put me on clomid (an ovulation drug) with metformin but I didn’t get to that stage as I fell pregnant again in February this year and am now 8 weeks pregnant.

It’s likely you will have to have the HSG and depending on the results, have medication of some sort to aid you achieving pregnancy. If that doesn’t work, they will go down the lines of injectable medication to aid and finally, IVF if all else fails. Depending on where you live, you may get 2-3 attempts of IVF through the NHS.

Sorry this is such a long post, but I totally understand what you’re going through. It’s definitely not all doom and gloom though, and always helps to stay optimistic 👍🏼

Hi Katy

Thank you so much and congratulations on your pregnancy!!

My GP is waiting for my husbands results and wants to refer us to fertility clinic straight away.

I was on Metformin when I first found out I had PCOS at about 18, but came off a couple of years later.

No I’ve been told I am not Ovulating. Did you have many periods before metformin?

I know we are probably quite early days with the process but it’s really helpful to understand what the next steps might be, so thank you x

I did have a few periods, but they would be so irregular and would be 90+ days. The metformin brought them right down and started my ovulation back up - I also watched my sugar intake. If you have any other questions on your journey, I’m happy to help if I can! X

Hi Lauren,

If you think you will be going down the fertility route, take a look at the HFEA (human fertilization and embryology authority) website and from there take a look at what fertility clinics are available to you. Check the different clinic reviews out, check to see if you will be eligible for NHS funding, and read about the process. Good luck x

Get on a low carb diet. I had both my boys naturally just by eating this way. Sugar makes pcos worse.
