I have just learned that some of my work colleagues are going to peru and have been getting a number of vaccinations including vaccinated for hepatitis /yellow fever /malaria and a number of other vaccinations. Is it safe to be in contact with them. I am waiting on my consultant getting back to me but i am but going to work shortly

Hi Chrisellie. Consultant got back to me. Said no risk. Immunosuppressed people can't get live vaccinations as the body doesn't know it is not the actual virus and reacts as if it is. In normal healthy people the vaccination tricks the body into thinking it is the virus and the immune system kicks in but as they don't actually have the virus there is no risk in passing this on.

It can certainly happen with the polio vaccination! Babies shed the live virus after being given the oral version - which is still used outside the USA>

I think it depends if they are live vaccines. I believe yellow fever probably is. Malaria tends to be pills nearer holiday time. Perhaps you can give them a wide circle until your consultant gets back to you.

I think you should avoid close contact with those who have had live vaccines for a while. If you need quick advice try the local or national infectious diseases people:
