Root canal filling?

Got to have a root canal filling....it's booked at the end of the month. I'm on 5mg of steroid and six monthly rituximab. Any advice, or suggestions about extra precautions welcome. I've talked it through with my dentist, and he has prescribed antibiotics for the next few days. He seems fairly relaxed about the idea.

Hi BronteM,

Have had one done in the past but not since I have been unwell. Just wanted to say I hope it all goes well.

Hi, I had one done just after my Rituximab and didn't take any extra pro cautions. I had no problems other than a bit discomfort like any normal person. Gud luck anyway hope all goes well!

Thank you. I know what you mean...the antibiotics have started working, but I'm still pretty sore, and eating isn't easy.

Hi BronteM , I think you have same type of Vasculitus as me, TA. I have had root canal work done and didn't have any extra meds. I was fine. Good luck, hope all us well x

Yes, I'm TA too. Thank you for your reassurance. Nice to know I needn't worry about extra meds!

Dear BronteM,

I can only echo, the above, so long as your dentist is aware, of your condition, and has prescribed anti-biotics, then don't worry unduly- you'll be fine babe! Take my word for it I have had...erm...er...well quite a lot, root treatments anyway.

Once again, so long as you have made the dentist aware of your condition, try not to worry too much.

Kind regards AndrewT

My dentist has been great...he has autoimmune issues too, so I feel in safe hands. Not sure I can cope with the idea of this again though. Once is enough!

Hi sorry to be a negative comment, just had to have 5 root canal filled teeth removed as all had infection in. All low grade so no big deal but enough to make me feel worse than normal. It was picked up by a ct scan at hosp when I went to the dentist the infection had spread across three teeth, was given many courses of antibiotics cleared it up for a while only to come back we vengeance. Was referred to hospital who then discovered the extent of the problem so 5 teeth removed and one cyst from the massive infection. I would never again have root canal filling. It has cost a fortune and been nothing but bad news, and after each filling would have a massive flare so not good. Good luck with what ever you decide xx

Best to get your doctor's advice.

I had a number of root canals when i was much younger and nit yet diagnised with BD. If I knew what I now know, I would not have opted for the root canal.

Do not forget to tell your dentist if you have ever taken fosamax/fosavance or one of those treatment for bone loss, whcih can cause problems with the gums

Thank you very much for all your advice, everyone. I did talk to my dentist again, and to my GP. So I've had one set of antibiotics and doubled my steroids to 10 mg for a few days. It was done in two goes - a back tooth has three roots!- and the second was yesterday. So far, so good, and I am going back for a check in ten days time. Fingers crossed.
