I have Hasimotos and my main problem is elevated blood sugar when taking thyroid medication.

In 2004 I was taking levothyroxine and my blood sugar became very high and affacted my Eyes and I did cataract operation and at that time i stopped taking thyroid medicine.

Now I switched to Nature-Throid Before 4 months and the blood tests shows elevated fastig glucose 8.1 mmol/L (4.2-6.3) .

HbA1c (IFCC) 50 (31-46) mmol/ mol

what should i do ?can any one help me with this problem I am thinking of stop the medicine because Iam concerned this will affect my Eyes again,if I switch to medication with T3 should I face the same problem? and what is wrong with my body to have this.

I will be thankful to your help

I really think that you should see your doc again. Are you type 1 or 2 diabetic? Diabetes can result in early cataracts and you need regular eye checks for other diabetic related eye problems if blood sugar is not stable. these though would have been apparent when the cataracts were spotted, so please don't worry.

If your doc has not referred you to an endocrinologist I would insist. Go tomorrow and let us know how you get on.

I'm not medically qualified but personally would not stop taking the thyroid meds.

Talking to myself , again... :) The reason I think this is that you have been prescribed Levo and not a sugar lowering drug. Your sugar is high so I can see why you are worried. I tested my own sugar before being diagnosed underactive, I was borderline type 2 diabetes before, and have a premature cataract, so I know how worried you must be. I had surges in blood sugar, but after eating which my doc just , literally laughed at. Nothing worse than ketones flashing.I tested my own after a borderline result. and changed my diet so readings were OK for so long I forgot about it. I don't have diabetes but was getting very high readings after eating certain foods. I don't have a sweet tooth fortunately.

I think that that there is a domino effect with hormones. Which is why you should see an endo.

Thanks for you all.

I have border line type 2 diabetes, the doctor says there is no need for medication, have been tested regularly for Eye diabetic problemes and the last test Before 5 months is normal because my blood sugar rises within thyroid medication and I began taking nature throid before five months only.

Thank you again for response.

Hi It is not the thyroid drugs. As you know Hashimoto is autoimmune. It means you are likely to have other autoimmune diseases to. A common one is Diabetes, hormonal and autoimmune. You do not have to be fat. Also to start with symptoms more or less the same as Hypo.Make sure you have the diabetes treated. If seeing an endo, that is ideal.

Best wishes,

Jackie
