body temperature

anybody know how to get warm. I'm so cold I find it hard to function. My body temperature (before getting out of bed in the morning) varies between 34.5 and 35.6. I wake up cold and just get colder as the day goes on.

hi there, how did the visit to the rheumatologist go?

Take no notice of me - I'm just a learner - but before my op I was freezing, tremors & panicky - think I was maybe overactive now I'm under - knackered but warmer! Jane :)

i'm still waiting for my appointment. I hadn't realised that I had got so cold until people at work complained about how hot my office is

Thanks

I get confused between hyper and hypo - several folks I know have both symptoms too.

Lucky you with your own office! - I used to wear coat & gloves with the aircon! my hands would crunch brr!

Sounds like you are under active, (hypothyroid).... when you're underactive everything slows down so you effectively hibernate.

What meds are you on? What test results do you have?

I use some ideas for keeping warm from the outdoors forums such as those for camping and walking- lots of very thin layers and I also put 4 layers of fleece blankets over a winter duvet at night. Sometimes though I feel warm to the touch but feel really cold inside. Maybe make up a flask of hot water to keep by the bed to make a warm drink in the morning.

I also find a fleecy hat good.

At work it's warm but cold at home. I struggle to work in the evenings unless I'm all snuggled up in my fleece blankets and have had lots of warm drinks and something hot to eat.

I'm recently diagnosed so still learning how to manage my symptoms and finding it useful to hear of how others cope.

Hot drinks (eg, hot water) and hot food (soup); cup of hot water with lemon and fresh grated ginger in the morning, on an empty stomach (helps liver function too); Curapad heat pads which last all day so you can attach them to the inside of your shirt (eg, against your lower back); soaking your feet in a bucket of hot water (this is what I need to do every evening!). You can buy slipper boots that you heat up in the microwave - if you have your own office you could even get away wearing them at your desk.

Hi, my worst time is at night, so I bought an electric blanket with dual controls, so my husband doesn`t overheat whilst I bask. It also has a feature, so if I want I can keep it on all night.

Before that that I had 2x 13 tog quilts on the bed!!

Hello Rosii. I to had a simliar problem but since being on thyroxine I am warm most of the time. I have to say this was the most remarkable experience I have had. Blood test last week showed my TSH had risen from the stabilised 2.8 to 3.9. Not made an appointment to discuss yet as I am feeling not too bad. Although my doc is very good I doubt that he will take action until I am once again above 4. i started off at around 8 so it is amazing with only 25 mg a day that the improvement has been good and I in better frame of mind. Think everyone over 60 starts on a low dose. Like you my temperature was between 34 and 35 before I started treatment but now it comes in at 36.5. No weight loss but then again not much increase either but I do regular exercise and avoid bad eating habits. Think it also helps that I do not ever drink alcohol. Hope you warm up soon

Thanks everyone for your comments. My test results were all in the normal range and I was put on 100mg of eltroxine for 2 weeks and then taken off it. I do have an electric blanket along with a fleece blanket and 2 duvets. I wear 2 pairs of socks to work and boots but unfortunately once i get cold I find that only a hot bath will enable me to get warm.

I dont drink alcohol either but am finding that I can only manage to eat a bowl of porridge and half a sandwich each day. Unfortunately I have too much joint pain to be able to exercise to either warm up or improve my appetite.

Was'Normal' the doctors opinion? Some doctors leave the patients to be very hypothyroid as they have no knowlege or expertise in this area. (though they like to think they know what they are doing). A two week trial of meds is a cruel joke. It takes 6 weeks to build them up in your system.

A normal TSH is 1, anything over 2.5 would be treated in many countries and anything over 4 puts you at risk of heart problems and is frankly negligent.

Ask the doc for your results alaong with the reference ranges and post them on here, then you can see if they are 'normal' or not. The results are yours by right, so he has to give them to you.

I got my results and they were ft4 16.5 tsh 0.1

When this test was taken were you on or off meds? If you were on meds, had you taken them before the test because taking them less than 6 hours before a test, can skew the results.

A free T3 would show whether you were converting the T4 to T3. If you are converting OK and have no reverse T3 issues, you'd need to look at what could be stopping cellular uptake.

There is a whole minefield to negociate.....
