Hi Alli

This can sometimes be caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency. Ask your GP for a test. If you've had one done before but it was a while ago it's worth getting checked again, mine dropped over 100 in 2 years.

As with thyroid tests, it's worth getting your actual level and reference range as there's a vast range of 'normal'.

Agreed Barbara,

And in case your B12 is low, have a look here:

"Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause anaemia and neurological complications. Vitamin B12 is rarely prescribed in the oral form in most countries. Two randomised controlled studies were included in this review. The trials recruited a total of 108 participants and followed up 93 of these from 90 days to four months. The evidence derived from these limited studies suggests that high oral doses of B12 (1000 mcg and 2000 mcg) could be as effective as intramuscular administration in achieving haematological and neurological responses."

All the best

Thanks Rod

I do think it has something to do with the Bvits. I have had all bloods tested and my Vit B12 was low as was my folate, however because they were within the path lab ref range they were deemed to be "normal" I have started taking B12 sublingually and folic acid and I think I can detect a small improvement in the burning sensations. Does anyone know where to get folic acid in a 5mg dose? I can only get 400u (mcgs) and its too low a dose.

Hi Alli,

I've had a look at the BNF (British National Formulary) and it looks like the 5mg dose of folic acid is a prescription only strength. See bnf.org/bnf/bnf/current/490... You will need to register to see the page but it's free.

If your doctor is sympathetic maybe s/he would prescribe it for you to see if it makes a difference. It only costs 99p for 28 tablets which shouldn't break their budget!

These links are interesting re B12 deficiency, they are about a Dr who has been treating patients with lower end of range B12 levels with some very good results:
