T3 & feeling hypo

So since Christmas I have been feeling increasingly fatigued, falling asleep at random times and starting to feel confused about feeling hypothyroid. Checked my meds today and my T3 was out of date! Explains the feeling of everything being too much, headaches, lethargy etc Just mentioning this in case anyone else might need to check the date on their meds

Have thrown out two packets of liothyronine (Thybon Henning) which felt wrong but had to be done.

How much out of date?

Sorry should have said, expired Dec 24 and been taking them until today. Not effective once expired

The manufacturer guarantees the potency of any medication until the expiry date. That means that the liothyronine should have had the stated potency until that particular date.

As other people have mentioned, it will not suddenly become unstable or unusable, as the degradation is usually a slow process and after 6-12 months, you will start seeing a difference. I suspect that this batch may have been less potent to start off with and therefore the degradation process could have been quicker? Just a thought!

I need high dose T3-only and have used it up to 2 years out of date and it hasn't lost it's potency.....how do I know? Symptoms and experience

I probably wouldn't use any much older than that.

I doubt T3 that is only 3 months out of date would have a negative effect.....it doesn't work one day then suddenly doesn't a few days later.

I'm not the only member here who uses/ has used out of date replacement hormone.

It's too expensive and hard to come by to waste.

Do you have any recent lab results? I'd be more inclined to think your dose needs adjusting.

How much are you taking and is it in a T4/T3 combo dose?

Sorry but I think you've been a tad hasty, might have been better to check with us before binning the tablets.

I've just checked and the T3 I'm using expired on 01/25 and I have several boxes from that batch still to use.

I messaged my pharmacist and the advice was to bin it as it becomes unstable.

They would say that wouldn't they!! They have to cover their backs in this increasingly litigious society we now live in.

Common sense no longer counts.

Little wonder the NHS is short of funds.

Yes T3 will eventually become unstable but not after 3 months. T3 potency remains for several years if stored correctly.

Totally agree with DippyDame . I've taken T3 even older than 2 years out of date and it was perfectly fine. I've lost the details but the US army did experiments with out of date medications, and found that they can be even older than that without lose of potency. I think helvella knows more about that.

Can you retrieve them from the dustbin? I'd take them! :)

I read about that as well. I think some drugs worked fine even 15 years after expiry.

GG as always your Spot On. I used thyroid meds past two years and they worked well for me. As you said if you keep the thyroid meds in a cool dry place it shouldn't be a problem.

I would pick them back out of the bin

Get a blood test see what’s going on

Perhaps thyroid levels are off or vitamin levels need improvement

Exactly 💯. It has more to do with thyroid Dose Not being right.

I hoard my Armour as you never know when our beloved federal agencies are going to not allow doctors to prescribe it. I've watched them slowly, year after year, come up with excuse after excuse to stop the manufacturing of different brands of NDT. I'm currently taking 4 year old Armour which still, seems to be. 100% potent, as I feel fine on it (no symptoms of low thyroid). I've noticed that this seems to be the oldest (4 years) out I can go without having the return of "some" symptoms.

Have you tried changing the time when you take them? Different for everyone. I split my 25 mcg T3, half 7 am, half 2 pm - food doesn't interfere with T3 - and take my 75 mcg Levo at 8:30 pm - 2 hrs after dinner and no further eating. Got tips from Thyroid Canada.

Thanks, might try this. Think I need to tweak the dose

Good evening, why levothyroxine before bed, could you please elaborate? I am on a small dose of T3/T4, trying to figure out how to take it so that I stop falling asleep at noon. Currently taking 3mg first thing in the morning and at 1PM. My night sleep is sooo much better even on the dose I am getting, but cannnot help feeling drowsy before noon.. After the nap and a coffee I can function till the evening, however mornings are lost on me because of sleepiness.

Trial and error with at least 2 months between changes of timing or dose. It's taken me 5 decades to get here. Read Thyroid Canada, Paul Robinson, too.

Can get these kind of symptoms when your essential vitamins are too low - because deficiency prevents any thyroid meds from being used properly in the body. It's a cycle / circle - any break in the process can reduce take up in the cells, and thus you feel hypothyroid, and have symptoms, even though your dose of thyroid is OK.
