Hi there, I was originally diagnosed with hyperthyroid, however I now have the following results as Dr thinks I could either have hashimotos or graves. Can anyone help me understand these blood results please?! TIAFT4 11.6

TSH 1.54

TRAB 0.69

I have low folate still despite taking folic acid. Reading is 2.7 for Folate.

Thank you!

Hey there again ;

This looks more like Hashimoto's as your TSH is in the range now -

Graves generally presents with a TSH stuck down at 0.01 - despite taking an Anti Thyroid drug.

Your have been on Carbimazole a couple of months now so your T4 may well be a false low -

and I think in your previous post your TPO were just over range - so these are indicative of having Hashimoto' which presents with transient hyper episodes as this Auto Immune disease systematically attacks and disables your thyroid and ultimately leaves you with reduced thyroid function and needing to be prescribe T4 - thyroid hormone replacement.

Do you have a range for the TRab reading as that could be clue to rule out Graves Disease ?

I think a TRab under 1.00 is a negative - but ranges can vary between Laboratories.

You might like to read around on Hashimoto's - and many forum members find the research and suggestions of Dr Izabella Wentz of value - thyroidpharmacist, com

Thank you Pennyannie. Yes the TRAB range is 0 -0.4

That range doesn't look right - if it is correct that then makes it a positive for Graves ?

Not sure what to think now ?

Thinking on :

I agree; think they're not sure so want me to retest in 4 weeks .....

In 4 weeks time if you continue to take the AT drug at the same dose your thyroid hormones will likely be lower than they are now -

What is the range attached to this T4 reading of 11.60 ?

as you risk your T3 and T4 falling into the bottom of the ranges and where you may well start experiencing the equally disabling symptoms of hypothyroidism ?

I think this range belongs to the TSH and not the Graves - TRab - the Thyroid Receptor antibodies :

please add ranges on these results

ALWAYS test early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high TPO and/or high TG thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Significant minority of Hashimoto’s patients only have high TG antibodies (thyroglobulin)

NHS only tests TG antibodies if TPO are high

Essential to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 3-5 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

endocrinenews.endocrine.org...

In days before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12 if last test result serum B12 was below 500 or active B12 (private test) under 70
