Iron blood test results

Hi Everyone

Can anyone help me with my Iron blood tests results please.

I am taking 200mg Ferrous Sulphate once a week as prescribed by my Doctor. I was originally on it daily but my dose has been gradually reduced over the course of the last year or so.

I haven’t spoken to the Doctor about my results yet but according to the notes on them they are normal or not clinically significant.

My serum ferritin seems a lot higher than it usually is, I have no idea why.

I just wondered what everyone else thought.

Serum Ferritin - 173 (13-150) (Dr’s comment - normal)

Serum transferring- 1.8 (2.0-3.6) (Dr’s comment - any abnormalities are not clinically significant)

Transferrin Saturation - 34 (15-45)

Serum Iron Level 15.6 (5.8-34.5)

Previous ferritin results

4/1/24 - 125 (13-150)

9/5/24 - 120 (13-150)

Thank you for all your help.

hi, sorry you haven’t had a reply.

I’m no expert but have read here before that higher ferritin can be the result of inflammation. As many of us have autoimmune conditions it’s not uncommon.

Here is a link to some info I found online from an NHS source guidance for GPs.

Have you had any viral illness recently? It’s certainly the season for it. Ferritin can go up as a response to that (and will fall again).

Many thanks for your reply. I have recently had a chest infection so maybe it was that.

It is very likely to be that. Hope you’re feeling better!

Hi Alpha, I agree with the above as the most likely suspect is inflammation.

You heed to include a CRP-hs test (which measures inflammation) every time you have ferritin measured for situations just like these!

Also - your iron and transferrin saturation % looks great on the above. If the ones from (Jan/may or April /sep - my American brain can’t tell), are similar then likely this time it’s just inflammation .

But no one iron measure tells the whole story, so always helpful to see all results sets together.

Many thanks for your reply. It is really helpful.

My GP has only tested my Ferritin levels before, this is the first time my serum transferrin, serum Iron and transferrin saturation have been tested.
