T4/T3 combo

Hi,

Hope everyone is well

I’ve recently been trialing a T4/T3 combo.I tried NDT a few years back and felt really well whilst taking it.I was taking around 2-21/2 grains a day.Stopped taking it as the prices seemed to increase and couldn’t afford it really. So thinking of adding some T3 to my 150 mcg of Eltroxin which I currently take.

Could someone tell me what would be the equivalent dose of T4/T3 would be please.

I’m currently taking 150 mcg of eltroxin. When I started adding the T3 about a month ago,Istarted feeling hyper/anxious,jittery so I’ve stopped the T3 for now.I was only taking 2.5 mcg of T3 at the time.Should I lover my dose of T4 before trying again.

Cheers

There is no exact equivalence between NDT & T4+T3 as we all use these differently.

Can you post latest blood results on Levo only?

How are vitamin levels and what are you supplementing with?

I agree with Jaydee1507 - equivalence is very individual.

Having said that, I have produced a short document which might give you some idea as to the range of possibilities. Though it was very much written to highlight the issues of using the standard "conversion" tables which can be found on many sites.

helvella - Desiccated Thyroid Equivalence

A short document which explains how you can approximately convert dosages of desiccated thyroid and levothyroxine.

Looking at previous posts you recently had very low Active B12

What vitamin supplements are you now taking

Only test after minimum 6-8 weeks on constant unchanging dose and brand Levothyroxine/T3

What brand of levothyroxine are you taking

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

T3 ….day before test split T3 as 2 or 3 smaller doses spread through the day, with last dose approximately 8-12 hours before test

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Post all about what time of day to test

Medichecks and BH also offer private blood draw at clinic near you, or private nurse to your own home…..for an extra fee

Only do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning.

Tips on how to do DIY finger prick test

support.medichecks.com/hc/e...

If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test

If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 5-7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12 if last test result serum B12 was below 500 or active B12 (private test) under 70:

Currently taking folate supplement and also B12 spray.Everything else seems to be ok.Hopefully this will get my active B12 up where it should be.

Hello Oily :

No thyroid hormone replacement works well until your core strength vitamins and minerals - those of ferritin, folate, B12 and vitamin D are up and maintained at optimal levels -

I now aim for a ferritin at around 100 - folate around 20 - active B12 125 ( serum B12 500++ ) and vitamin D up at around 125:

Hi pennyannie

Vits and minerals all good apart from my active b12 which is low.Don’t know what’s going on there to be honest, because my serum b12 is over 500.

So at the moment I’m taking a b12 spray to see if that makes a difference…fingers crossed.

Active B12 is a ' better ' blood test in as much as it shows readily available B12 - rather than total/ serum B12 - but would think - either /or at an optimal level ok :
