I picked up a couple of years ago that dosing with selenium may help overall health and the hypo symptons and had a very brief attempt with a few brazil nuts. I was later persuaded on this board to use selenium tablets in the most absorbable version and took these for quite a while.
I gave up as i simply could not feel any observable improvement and was not able to measure factually if I was actually deficient in the first place.
Back to the present and I have really enjoyed for the past 6 months daily helpings of walnuts in my morning smoothie - partly for all the claimed benefits for brain health and that I can actually notice a distinct improvement in mood and saiety when used within a smoothie. More than happy that is my experience and may not be others, but peanuts and cashews for example when snacked seem to have none of the same effects for me.
So I have been thinking again about the possible benefits of brazil nuts and whether taking them with the walnuts each day would be an even better solution i.e. a decent spread of micro nutrients alongside the claimed selenium benefits.
So for 2025, I will stick to a combination of these two nuts working on the basis of a max of 3 brazil nuts a day to avoid any overload of selenium and let's see how it goes.
Interested to know if anyone is particularly committed to any specific raw nuts above these two in their daily food choice and if so, why.
If someone has not tried daily raw walnuts they are really worth if you are committed to a longer term approach with consistency - I would never be without them now

I wish you well on your nut quest, I think the key thing is the freshness, which isn't always easy to know, and the richness of the soil they have been grown in
In conclusion, Brazil nuts offer a natural and delicious way to improve your sleep quality. Through their melatonin-boosting properties, magnesium content, and ability to elevate serotonin levels, these nuts can contribute to a more restful and rejuvenating slumber. By incorporating Brazil nuts into your diet and adopting healthy sleep habits, you can pave the way for a night of uninterrupted sleep and wake up feeling refreshed and energized.
Many thanks for responding. I did read recently that one possible benefit of brazil nuts is to improve sleep. Having tried most things to improve consistent sleep over recent years if this helps at all in this area it will be an unexpected bonus
I eat a big handful of hazelnuts daily, struggle with freshness and found Asda has best quality in their snacking ones, health food shops have lots of old/mouldy ones hidden.
I supplemented selenium for ages and GP tested and I was over range. Stopped for 3 months and it came back into range.
I eat brazils when I feel like them, have walnuts, pecans, pistachios in the cupboard too. Love nut butters and make lots of snacks with ground almonds.
Hubby took Selenium too for no particular reason (he did a vitamin roulette for a while - daft thing) and got the awful garlic breath smell and quite a telling off.
i eat walnuts frequently just cos i like em and they always do make me feel like i've eaten something worthwhile . never realised until you prompted me to look it up that they are such a good source of omega3 ..... plus it's always fun to see if you can get one out whole.
i usually put a handful of almonds in my pocket when working outdoors ...( dry stone waller's trick ~ 'eat on the go' )
i like blanching almonds and stuffing them in green olives, so i quite often have a jar of those about my person somewhere to save me from the temptation of buying a crap snack.
unfortunately i don't like brazil nuts much, which is a shame .
can't be doing with peanuts, like you i find they don't have the same feel good effect at all.. probably cos they're not nuts , they're peas/ legumes really aren't they. cashews don't 'feel good' either , even though i like the taste .
on a sad note , i used to be very good friends with a walnut tree in a field just off the A1... just had a look to see how it's doing on satelite image .......... some miserable bleeder appears to have cut it down . ...... there should be a law against chopping down something that's older than you are .
with nuts, it's all about the freshness , one bad one can put you off for ages.
