hi all.
has anyone ever had high b12?
I read somewhere that high b12 results actually meant there was a deficiency (make it make sense lol)
Anyone have any ideas? X

How high is high? Can you give us the actual numbers, please? The ranges are of little use where B12 is concerned.
Have you had your folate tested? B12 can be high due to low folate, because the two work together.
GG thank you for this information . Glad to learn . This forum is chuck full of very valuable information. Thank you for your Great contributions.
It wasn’t overly high the range was (187-883) and mine was 930.
Folate was (3.1-20.5) and mine was 8
Even though it's over-range, that is not excessively high for B12. It's the range that is the problem - and at best, ranges are only a rough guide. So, given that you are taking B12 (a multi-vit?) and that your folate is low, it's not surprising that your B12 is that high.
What you need to do is raise your folate.
How do we raise the folate? X
By taking it.
But I can't suggest anything without knowing what you're already taking.
I only take iron supplements and vitamin D (stopped taking b complex vitamin when the high b12 came back)
OK, so If I were you, I'd get some methylfolate tablets, about 400 mcg, and take those until the pot is empty. then go back on your B complex as a maintenance dose. The B12 will probably drop as the folate increases.
Are you taking vit C with your iron, and magnesium and vit K2-MK7 with your vit D?
is this one ok x
Are you taking any B12?
There can be some concern if your B12 is very high despite NOT taking any B12 supplements.
yes! I have high B12 and heard the same thing. Mine should be depleted too as I take Metformin. My private Thyroid Dr also suggested that I supplement with B12 as I may not be absorbing properly which is why it’s floating around in my blood… I’ve only been taking it a few days so too early to tell if it’s making a difference or not but it supposed to help with tingling and nerve issues
it’s a genetic thing that prevents utilization and elimination of B12. So you may have elevated B12 in your blood but a cellular deficiency. If that is not the case for you and you are not supplementing B12 or B complex, a very high B12 can be an indicator of colon cancer. My B12 was more than double the upper range. I did have a tumor and after colon surgery B12 quickly dropped to mid range almost immediately.

I almost always have high B12 (over the range). My serum level has been as high as
> 2000 ng/L but it does drop when I reduce or stop supplementing. My Active B12 is usually over the range too and drops when I reduce or stop supplementing.
I take a B Complex with occasional high dose Methylcobalamin. Some links you might find reassuring :

So informative and reassuring thank you!! X
The pernicious anemia site contains the same references I would have suggested (thank you @humanbean). If you have a serious condition related to excessively high B12, you’ll likely also have symptoms and/or it will show up in other blood work (CBC, liver, kidney labs, colon screening, etc.)
