High active B12

Hi wonder if anyone can help me. I sent away to medichecks for a blood test for thyroid which also included active b12 and folate. My active b12 has come back really high (not taking supplements) and folate is very low. Does anyone know what causes this. Also should I supplement folate.

The numbers are

Folate 2.46(3.89-19.5)

Vitb 12 active >300 (37.5-156)

Thanks

Les

There is a theory that you need all your B vitamins at good levels and if one (or more) of the other B vitamins are low then the other B vitamins can't be used. Known as B12 functional deficiency

As you have folate deficiency you either need folic acid supplements prescribed by GP

Or Supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in not folic acid may be more beneficial.

B vitamins best taken in the morning after breakfast

Igennus Super B complex are nice small tablets. Often only need one tablet per day, not two. Certainly only start with one tablet per day after breakfast. Retesting levels in 6-8 weeks

Or Thorne Basic B or jarrow B-right are other options that contain folate, but both are large capsules

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results

Low B12 symptoms are possible despite apparently high levels

Low vitamin D and low B vitamins may be linked as explained here

What was your vitamin D result and ferritin result?

Personally I always had high B12, yet had never taken any supplements

When I started improving low B vitamins, by taking good quality daily B complex, high B12 level dropped a lot

They never checked D but my ferritin was high as well 167 (13-150) I’m going to do a full iron panel for that before I start stressing over it. Just ordered it so will hopefully know more soon. I’m not taking any supplements yet. Have ordered methyl folate to start with that.

Ferritin is often slightly high due to inflammation of Hashimoto's

Getting vitamin D levels tested is important

Thanks SD I will get that tested too. It is normally so in the winter months I always supplement with it when I remember 🙄

You want vitamin D at least around 80nmol and around 100nmol may be better
