The controversial T2's

Hi there.......I'm in my 20th year of being a hypothyroid mess. Much to my shame I have never heard anything about T2"s before. Does anyone know where I can source some cheaper than the US Westin Child's brand? . I have just paid £80+ . The shipping is outrageous on top of an already expensive brand. I know T2 hasnt got an amazing press. But then I've tried Armour, NP, Nature Throid, bovine, porcine, iodine etc over the years all to not much avail. And I can't afford the prices of natural anymore.

I'm currently on T3 and T4. So at this point I've got nothing to lose.

Anyone that could point me in the right direction or who have positive experiences with it , I'd be buzzing if you could share and send it. Many thanks in advance 🙏

Just because we have T2 naturally as part of our total thyroid function, does not mean taking it exogenously will biologically slip right into the body’s cellular chain reactions and top off your thyroid function.

T2 is marketed and studied as a weight loss and workout supplement. Even the most glowing of recommendations note these are completely untested, inconsistent and have side effects and risks that are unknown whether they outweigh any benefits there might be.

Even Westin Childs doesn’t have anything definitive to say other than - hey, it’s worth trying! But even he is hawking it for its metabolic and weight loss benefits. Which for me is a red flag for junk science.

This one is a scientific paper that is worth reading in full pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articl...

Its conclusion is this:

in addition to increased metabolism and reduced fat mass, T2 administration also leads to suppression of the HPT axis, increased food intake, and cardiac hypertrophy. A particular point of concern is the observation that the lower dose of T2 used by the authors exerts negligible effects on adiposity and metabolic outcomes, yet results in a marked suppression of the HPT axis leading to reduced levels of circulating T4 and T3 (and presumably TSH), with unknown long-term consequences. The implication of this finding is that, for a given dose, the detrimental effects of T2 on the HPT axis may preferentially occur before the intended metabolic ones. Thus, for the time being, these new data should compel users of T2-containing supplements to assess their thyroid status, err on the side of caution, and limit their daily dose, as appropriate.

You may note the date is 2015, and wonder if there is anything more recent. I couldn’t find anything - and even Westin Childs article footnotes this one.

Thank you. Desperate times and measures now tho. I have had surgery twice and have still never managed to lose weight ...It's all hormonal. And after all these years I'm full up to the brim of the thyroid situation. So I am still keen to see if I could be one of the lucky folk who it actually shows promise for.

That article has been cited 63 times and this is a list of the papers making those cites!

That being said - welcome to the conversation… I see you’re a longtime member but this is your first post!!!!

Hopefully you can share your thyroid blood test results and history so we know more about you and can offer more relevant shared experiences.

It is far more likely there are opportunities to optimize your core “traditional” thyroid treatment and vitamins.

Re to this post - is your goal to feel better, optimize your thyroid hormone levels… or to lose weight?

Further - even if you were to explore other options out on the edges … if you are truly looking at T2, please do read that paper in my first reply carefully. You will see that there is no one who says t2 can help optimize your thyroid hormone situations. And yet there is scientific evidence that the impact it does have in your hpt axis actually holds real risks.

One thing this board has helped me with is not making rash decisions when I feel desperate. This is a tough balancing act on a good day. T2 is very unlikely to make a positive difference. But if you do want to invest in it - please be proactive about your TSH, FT4 and FT3 and those will most likely be impacted in unknown ways.

Not what you're looking for?
