NDT: Split dose?

HashiADHDPerimeno profile image

I take 120 Armour Thyroid for Hashimotos . Been on this 2 grain dose for several years but my GP has no clue about it they just allow me to get it on a private prescription.. I’m barely monitored. Been reading on this awesome forum about people splitting the dose and curious to hear if I should do this? Would it stop my deathly exhaustion by 3pm? I’ve not had major blood work done for 10 years as the nhs won’t test my antibodies… any advice would be great!!!!

Dose splitting can really help with the afternoon slump, as can thinking hard about what you eat for lunch and changing habits (blood sugar lows can cause this fatigue too).

Not on NDT but I have experimented with T3 and T4 splitting and currently favour all T4 in the morning and half t3 morning and half bedtime. Used to have it about 2pm and that helped.

Other thing to ask is, are you on enough? When did you last check FT3 and FT4?

There’s not a lot of point in testing antibodies if you already know you have Hashimoto's. But it is worth knowing what your TSH, FT4 and FT3 is. Do you ever do private blood tests?

And the only way to know if splitting would help is to try it. I split my Armour dose—1.5 grains in the morning, 1 grain in the early evening. It may very well help.

Hello. I have just started on Armour and like the idea of an extra half grain. Do you cut your grains with a pill cutter? they seem quite small already. Do you find that the dose is evenly distributed accross the pill and feel quite consistent with cutting them? Or are you buying half grains, is that possible?

I used to split my dose, but as I take a lot of supplements too I found it tricky keeping it away from those. I went back to one dose a day and didn’t find any difference, but you could try it. As others have said, what are your recent blood results?

I take 2 NDT first thing, and then another at bed time. This suits me, but we are all different. I find I have the most energy in the evenings. This is fine in the spring and summer when I can potter in the garden all evening, but these dark evenings mean I tend to snooze and dribble on the cat, who does not seem to mind!

I came across this - The mean half-life of T3 in hyperthyroid patients is 0.63 days, so splitting the dose evens out the effect of the T3 in NDT. Hope this helps.

Yes, when on NDT I split it roughly evenly, one dose around 3am (in hopes it would improve my low cortisol) and the second half around 2 - 3pm, allowing a gap after lunch. When I tried taking all in the morning I got an afternoon slump; but I also agree with Regenallotment I have to watch what I eat, not too much carb for breakfast or lunch as that guarantees a rough ride in the afternoon
