Hi, can anyone tell me if there are ANY NDTs out there without corn (maize) or derivatives like dextrose? Thanks.
NDT without corn or derivatives?: Hi, can anyone... - Thyroid UK
NDT without corn or derivatives?
Pretty much, no.
Diluents allowed for Thyroid USP desiccated thyroid powder
This sort of information is locked away by the USP so that we patients cannot access it!
However, searching found what claims to be a copy of the USP document and that says:
It may contain a suitable diluent such as Lactose, Sodium Chloride, Starch, Sucrose, or Dextrose.
My memory is claiming there might be one or two other substances are specifically permitted but I cannot find confirmation. I'll update if I can find out more. But as written, it seems to allow anything that is considered "suitable" without definition of that.

I have never seen any product which use Sodium Chloride! But all products need to use something as a diluent in order to standardise potency.
And that is just in making the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) Thyroid USP. Other substances will be required so as to have a form which is suitable for making into tablets.

Contains details of all known desiccated thyroid products including information about several products not considered to be Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT/Desiccated Thyroid Extract/DTE).
Hello Diana
If you contact one of the compounding pharmacies listed on the Thyroid Uk website - which is the charity which supports this patient to patient forum - thyroiduk.org -
you can probably just get the powdered NDT made into a capsule form -
which you can either have made with just a couple of additives of your choice or left as a powder which you can take down in some water either with or without even swallowing the capsule.
However you will need a prescription :
Apologies for the gap. Thank-you so much for your suggestion about compounding pharmacies. Yes, I have been doing that for a number of years ever since the infamous Dr. in the US got rid of my maize-free Nature-Throid which I had been taking for a very long time with no problems. To acquire a prescription in the UK and then to get them made up is way more expensive than just ordering them from the US as one has to make an online (in my case) appointment with a doctor, the fee is not cheap for 15 mins to acquire a prescription, put the order in, wait a week or more for it to arrive by a courier or Royal Mail (signed for) - It is quite a rigmarole (we're on the move a lot) and only has a shelf life of 6 months. I have to take 4 grains a day of these (less of Nature-throid) and they come out at just under £1 each. Since I started on them (compounded with turmeric instead of the dreaded maize), my hair keeps falling out which tells me - ? Not sure, maybe it's the quality of the British USP? Certainly not turmeric. The doctor I consult with online is very nice and she makes me do a blood test every 6 months which shows acceptable levels of T4 active T3 upper range etc but with the antibodies off the charts. (Just so you know I gave up dairy, gluten, most grains etc over 10 years ago and I self inject B12 about once a month). Anyway I am rambling on here. Maybe I should put some of the above on a new subject about quality of compounded NDT in the UK. Again thanks for responding, Diana
As I understand things all NDT is made from the same Thyroid USP powder - with the difference being the fillers used to sustain the powder as a tablet with capsules tending to be more ' pure ' with just a couple of stabilisers - and can be custom made for those with known intolerance to certain substances.
By all means start a new post as it will open up the subject to many more forum members -
as for the hair loss - could be just a coincidence -
though could be associated with low iron stores - do you have any recent blood tests as we often see non optimal levels of ferritin as a potential cause.
Yes I had heard that. Last test showed ferritin was above normal. Thank-you.
Well normal is an opinion and doesn't mean much - guessing it means in the range - but where - top, bottom, middle ?
what was the result and range as you need to put any result into context and as a percentage through the range to better understand what is going on -
and when hypo we need optimal levels of vitamins and minerals to support our slowed metabolism.and to fully utilise and convert the thyroid hormone replacement into the active hormone T3 .
The best I found was Thyro-Gold a bovine desiccated thyroid developed by Dr John C Lowe. Naturalthyroidsolutions.com
Note that a is bovine desiccated thyroid, it doesn't have as much T3 in as porcine prescribed NDT. It's still way better than Levothyroxine though. The downside is that you have to buy it yourself.
