Tirosint - can anyone advise how I can find out if this brand is available in my area?

I am struggling to access lactose free Levothyroxine at my GP surgery’s pharmacy and have read that Tirosint has fewer excipients than most brands of T4 and wondered if anyone could advise me the best way forward for accessing this brand/or other similar brands? Many thanks.

Vencamil 100mcg (other doses due soon) ought to be freely available made by Aristo and supplied by Alliance

Tirosint would have to be ordered in specially on a named brand prescription. You would probably have to justify needing it with your GP on medical grounds.

Its quite a bit more expensive than other generics or brands but you could try Vencamil which is usually well tolerated and lactose & mannitol free.

You may find this post helpful. It shows the excipients by brand as of last December.

Tirosint is almost unobtainable on the NHS. This is a link to a chart of prescriptions for the 100 microgram capsules:

openprescribing.net/analyse...

I think it works out in excess of £200 per prescription.

Both Teva and Aristo Vencamil are lactose-free. Views on Teva vary between wonderful and intolerable!

helvella's medicines documents (UK and Rest of the World) can be found here:

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines

helvella has created, and tries to maintain, documents containing details of all thyroid hormone medicines in the UK and, in less detail, many others around the world. There is now a specific world desiccated thyroid document.

I highly recommend viewing on a computer screen, or a decent sized tablet, rather than a phone. Even I find it less than satisfactory trying to view them on my phone.

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines - UK

The UK document contains up-to-date versions of the Summary Matrixes for levothyroxine tablets, oral solutions and also liothyronine available in the UK. Includes injectables and descriptions of tablet markings which allow identification. Latest updates include all declared ingredients for all UK products and links to Patient Information Leaflets, etc. PLUS how to write prescriptions in Appendix F.

helvella - World Desiccated Thyroid

Contains details of all known desiccated thyroid products including information about several products not considered to be Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT/Desiccated Thyroid Extract/DTE).

helvella - Thyroid Hormone Medicines - RotW

Contains details of all levothyroxine, liothyronine and combination products - excluding desiccated thyroid products. Details available vary by country and manufacturer.

The link below takes you to a blog page which has direct links to the documents from Dropbox and QR codes to make it easy to access from phones. You will have to scroll down or up to find the link to the document you want.

How interesting. I thought these were not available via NHS.

As a Yank I cannot tell you were to obtain Tirosint in the UK. It was a game changer for me, even though I still have to fight my insurance company brittle tooth and nail to cover it. Instead, I'll remind you to go to the Tirosint website for the coupon, that maybe your pharmacy will accept. It helps with the priciness. Even after the co-pay or however it works with your NHS or private insurance etc.

Hi Mac2013,

Tirosint is the cleanest T4 that I know. I use it and I like it. The also have a vial version, I take the regular capsules. I live in Maryland, USA. I don’t know where you live, but here it’s easy to find. You just have to ask the doctor to prescribe levothyroxine capsules and not tablets. Also tirosint has a generic version that is cheaper and I think works well too.

Please let me know if I can help

You more. 🙂
