Vitamin D and Anxiety

I've got low vitamin D and one of my symptoms is severe anxiety and panic attacks. Not sure if these are related. Someone suggested taking magnesium alongside vitamin D to help with the panic and anxiety. Has anyone had any luck with magnesium citrate helping with anxiety?

Someone suggested taking magnesium alongside vitamin D to help with the panic and anxiety.

Did they really suggest magnesium for that reason? Or did they say that you should always take magnesium when taking vit d because the two work together, and taking vit D without magnesium will deplete your magnesium, which is probably low, anyway. I don't know if low magnesium causes panic and anxiety, but it does cause a hell of a lot of other symptoms, so you really ought to be taking it. :)

Hi, not sure your sex, age or what your thyroid status is but anxiety can be a major factor of perimenopause/menopause if that could apply to you.

Thank you I am female and 30 so I'm not sure menopause could be a factor? How would I know?

Yes, you're a bit young at 30. Usually perimenopause hits in our 40's but can be earlier.Symptoms are the main way of knowing your peri

I didn't know, hadn't even heard the word before but it really messed things up for me when in late 40's

I mentioned perimenopause as anxiety seems to be a massive issue for a lot of ladies.

There is a whole host of Symptoms of perimenopause and everyone is affected differently by it.

Change in periods, either ligher, heavier or erratic or no different

Mood swings, 0-60 in 3 seconds was me

Low mood

Night sweats, hot flushes

Anxiety

Detachment from family and friends

Brain fog, memory issues

Aches and pains

Fatigue

For me, it caused issues with my thyroid medication

There are many more symptoms too.

I do feel as females we can suffer all our lives with sex hormone issues

how low was vitamin D

How much vitamin D are you now taking

Magnesium supplements best taken separately from Vitamin D, usually in afternoon or evening…..and essential to be at least 4 hours away from levothyroxine

Retest vitamin D in 3-4 months

NHS Guidelines on dose vitamin D required

panmerseyapc.nhs.uk/media/2...

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly when supplementing

Can test via NHS private testing service

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function.

There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7.

One spray = 1000iu

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with thyroid issues we frequently need higher dose than average

Thyroid and other vitamins

How much levothyroxine are you taking

What were most recent TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 results

And B12, folate and ferritin results

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
