itchy skin

Purpleprincess1963 profile image

hi have any of you ladies out there had itchy skin with underactive thyroid. Mine is mainly on my back. I have used most creams to get rid of it but it comes and goes and it’s back again driving me mad at the moment. Could anyone recommend any remedies to help? Thanks

Jojoba or argan oil in the bath is helpful or, once bathed/showered, tipping some of said oil into the rinsed and wrung out flannel and using it as an applicator is really nice way to exfoliate and hydrate the skin at the same time

Longterm, finding the cause might be more useful

Thank you I will try that x

Have you had your B12 checked, a B12 shortage has itching as one of the symptoms. Hypo often goes hand in hand with other ailments such as pernicious anaemia, diabetes and atrial fibrillation. Of course it may not be related but it doesn't hurt to keep your eye on B12.

My skin becomes very itchy when my Armour dose needs to be adjusted, either up or down, and that usually sorts out the problem. Before I was diagnosed as being hypothyroid and gluten intolerant I had a patch of eczema on my back for years; as soon as I stopped eating gluten it disappeared and hasn't bothered me since. It may be worth looking at food sensitivities, particularly gluten and dairy.

I experienced itchy skin when first diagnosed as hypo and increasing meds, but not since.

From my experience, I would agree but I do recall my GP at the time telling me to expect itchiness as I started the meds and it would go, which it did. There were time later that I needed an increase but I never experienced it again.

But we are all different an allergic reaction to meds is not uncommon: make your GP aware of it.

I hope you get relief - it is very unpleasant

I've developed hives that appear almost daily in the evening at night and sometimes in the morning. Apparently this is when you are more likely to get allergic reactions. They started appearing in April. Popping up on my stomach and neck, behind knees and elbows. I have even had a couple of thick lips! I have finally come to the conclusion it is just my dodgy immune system that is overacting to something, either pollen or something I am eating. I am stable on Levo and Lio, have been for a couple of years. I briefly wondered if it was something in the medicine but I don't think it is. My gut instinct is I have been eating a lot of bread recently, perhaps I ate it when my immune system was fighting something else and I know react to wheat or something in the bread. I am taking Piritese or Piriton which has really helped with the symptoms. I guess my point is, if you have an autoimmune condition (thyroid) it is likely your immune system can be hypersensitive and can react to anything. I have read that my condition is 'chronic hives', nobody seems to know what causes it, its very difficult to find the trigger and it tends to disappear again within 6months to a year. I should pay more attention to what I am eating and keep a food diary, but I haven't! Try a daily antihistamine tablet and see it that helps. (The creams did nothing for me.)

Hi there I get trashy itchy skin too on my back. I keep all irritants off my back, I.e hairspray, perfumed shower gels and skin cream. I find double base cream from the pharmacy the best
