I have no Thyriod as I had thyriod cancer in 2018. My thyroxine has been too low for a while so Hypothyriod atm. Waiting for levels to balance but anxiety is awful. And feeling low etc.
The GP recommended Mirena coil as no interaction with Thyroxine for all the hormonal symptoms. But reading around it sounds like it can make Hypothyroidism worse and should I just wait for levels to balance and put up with awful anxiety etc.
If anyone has any good/bad experience of the coil would be good to hear

I have no personal experience of having one, but I’ve heard too many stories of people not being able to get coils or implants removed when they don’t get on with them to ever consider it myself.
The mini pill is also progesterone only, but you can just stop it if it doesn’t work out. You could even try switching to a different brand with a different synthetic progesterone if there was an issue. Is there a reason why your doctor hasn’t offered this as a first line option? It sounds less risky to me.
To be honest, I’m reasonably sure that anxiety and depression are possible side effects of the coil and the mini pill too so it doesn’t make much sense to me.
I would wait it out rather than adding more hormones to the mix.
Hopefully, someone who knows a bit more or has tried it will be able to help you.
Thank you! This is really helpful advice. I have the progesterone pill until I get the coil. But I’ve been thinking about whether I should just wait for my thyroid levels to balance. It’s just so hard when symptoms are so strong and I came on yesterday so was so emotional. I will give it more thought
Unfortunately, I think it’s just a waiting game. Frustrating for you though. Maybe you could try looking at natural ways to balance your hormones. There’s loads to read online and you could try out your local library too. I’ve read loads and it seems to all come down to plenty of sleep, a good varied diet (think high protein Mediterranean) and exercise that isn’t too intense. Just try taking things one step at a time though. Good luck. I hope it doesn’t take too long before everything falls into place.
